Philosophy In Jain Agams: Author and Time of Composition

Published: 16.01.2019

According to Jain tradition, gaṇadharas are composers of dvādaśāgī. This belief proves that even Sūtrakga is a composition of gaadharas.

Up to one thousand years after the salvation of Lord Mahavira āgamas were transferred to the disciples, who took efforts to imbibe them through oral-learning tradition. Then Devardhigani penned them down for the first time. Hence, from this point of view, authorship of current āgamas can be considered to be that of Devardhigani. The first śrutaskandha is the most ancient and the second śrutaskandha was appended later as an appendix.[1]   This text is important from the point of view of 'conduct' and 'metaphysical explanation' of philosophy.
