Time to Reach a Deep State of Meditation:

During the practice of meditation we focus on some object. But we find that the focus does not last long. It comes and goes. One state of mind is yaataayaat (unstable). We can focus on the object for a minute and then the focus goes away. Again mind concentrates and then looses. It's like yaataayaat or travelling As long as the state of instability remains in our mind the state of meditation is described as infant.

Once we are able to maintain focus, we see that the mind stops wandering. Perhaps we are able to maintain it for five minutes when no other thought enters our mind, then this thoughtless duration increases for 1020 minutes and improves up to half or an hour the we should understand that our meditation is transforming from the childhood to the youthful stage but not an old. The meditation is considered in the old or deep state only if we are able to hold the state of thoughtlessness for a period of an hour and a half.

Only those people can attain this state, who have a passionate desire to learn about the truth. Those who desire mere peace or bliss, relief from mental tension, freedom from diseases etc. their state of meditation will not progress from the infant state to the mature state because their objective is achieved and the desire to strive for a higher goal is nonexistent.
