Varshitap Recognition

Jain Society of Greater Detroit would like to convey our Anumodna to Pravinaben Ravani for completing Pola Attam Varshitap. Parna was held on May 22, 2022 in Novi, MI with family and friends. This was her third Varshitap.

Varshitap is done several different ways. Most common is fasting for 36 hours, on alternate days for 13 lunar months and 13 days continuously. In Varshitap a person eats on alternate days between sunrise and sunset only. A person can not eat on any two consecutive days for the period of fast but can fast on two consecutive days. She did this one in 1993 while raising three young girls.

Then 10 years later in 2013, she did her second Varshitap while working two jobs and raising 3 teenagers. In that one she did two days of total fast and ate every third day for a whole year. It’s called Chhath Varshitap.

She had up the anti each time. This one is called Pola Attham Varshitap. It’s a four day cycle starting with first day of total fasting, followed by Ekashna (one sit down meal only), then Fast again on the third day and Parna (eating all day between sunrise and sunset only) on the fourth day.

She gets her inspiration from her Ben/sister Jain Sadhvi (who is mahan Tapasvi) Pujya Vanitabai Swamiji. She’s been continuously doing Chhath Varshitap (two total Fast in a row and only one meal on every third day) for almost 40 years now.
