Ahimsa Times

May God make your year a happy one!
Not by shielding you from sorrows and pain,
But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes,
Not by making your path easy,
But by making you sturdy to travel any path,
Not by taking hardships from you,
But by taking fear from your heart,
Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows

Happy New Year

ANTIQUE JAIN IDOLS STOLEN FROM TEMPLE

Dec 20, 2013, Ajmer: Three ancient statues were stolen from a Jain temple situated in Sarawgi Mohalla of Naya Bazaar here. This is the third incident in last two years where Jain statues have been stolen.

The statues were said to be about 800 years old including one of Lord Mahaveer. According to the police, when the priest opened the temple he found that someone had broken the lock to of the temple's main gate. "Three statues along with some gold and silver ornaments were found missing," the priest told the police. These three statues were 'ashtadhatu' (made of eight elements).A large number of people gathered on the spot as soon as the news of theft reached them. The people were angry with the police. "Jain temples are specially targeted by robbers and this is the fourth incident of theft in the Jain temple," said a member of the Jain community. Earlier too statues in Goda Gail, Anand Mandir and Sarawgi Mohalla were stolen, while a Jain temple in Kishangarh was also robbed. "It seems that robbers were not locals but there is a gang which collects antique and unique statues from Jain temples," said an official. "This is a matter of not only valuable statues but a matter of faith of the community," said Patani. He added that these temples in the Walled City are very old and people have faith in them. AHIMSA AND VEGETARIANISM

MUKESH AMBANI OWNED RELIANCE TO DISCONTINUE NON VEG FOOD BUSINESS

Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Retail has decided to stop its non-vegetarian restaurant business, apparently because many of his staunch investors dislike the idea on religious or ethical grounds. Many Jains and Gujaratis have serious reservations about Reliance's chicken business because they are strict vegetarians.

However, Ambani was not the first businessman to decide to exit a business on investor pressure, and on ethical grounds, for religion-influenced investing has been an important trend for quite some time now. While Muslims have their Shariah-compliant funds and avoid investing in anything that uses pig-meat, Jains and Hindus have taken to creating Dharmic funds that avoid investing in alcohol, sugar and leather. In the west there are companies and funds that label themselves as Christian retailers - and the trend began sometime in the late 1990s. the last decade, Hindu, Jain and Buddhist Dharmic funds also made a start, and Dow Jones even developed an index for Dharmic Funds, which invest in good governance and green companies. In short, Ambani's exit from the chicken business is one of a piece with this global trend - even though his exit may have something to do with investor pressure. The move is part of a growing global trend of ethical investing where in faith-based mutual funds typically screen out stocks of companies that violate the tenets of a given religion or religious denomination. The concept entails investing in companies without compromising on values.

Socially responsible investment has been creating waves in the sea of global investment for the last two decades and has emerged as a specific investment class with several global investment banks creating special teams to work on this. A number of indices and exchange traded funds (ETFs) based on the socially responsible investment theme have been launched in recent years. An effort is made to promote and support companies who practice environmental stewardship, social justice, social development, human rights, gender equality, good corporate governance and diversity among others.

SILVER FOILS USED FOR SWEETS DECORATION ARE NOT VEGETARIAN

The silver foils are not very expensive. They are sold by weight. Ordinarily, you can buy a packet of 160 foils for a price between Rs.100 to 200. That is, approximately one rupee per foil. Not only the sweets, now a days it is also applied on fruits. Some Ayurvedic medicines also are wrapped in silver foils. They are made by hammering thin sheets of silver in middle of booklets made of a bull's intestines. In other words, after slaughtering a bull, quickly his intestines are removed, and sold to the manufacturers of foils. The skins made of old intestines are of no use. Even one-day-old intestines can not be used, because within a few hours they stiffen. The foil manufacturer removes blood and stools from the intestines, and cuts them into pieces. Then he puts one piece over another, making a booklet out of it. At his home, or in the factory, he puts one silver (or gold) sheet in-between each page.

Then he hammers it hard until those metal sheets turn into thin wafers. The intestines of bulls are so strong, that even repeated hammering do not destroy them, or they do not let the foils move around inside. Because of the hammering, some tissues of the intestine mix with the foils. After that the foil manufacturer sells the bundle of foils to the sweets manufacturers. Some small foil manufacturers sell the foils to the temples. This foil is not only dirty, it also is non-vegetarian. Even the meat-eaters do not eat intestines. Use of these foils turn even sweets into non-vegetarian food. A few years ago the Indian Airlines learned about this, and since then stopped using them on the sweets served in their planes. Silver foil, or varakh, as it is generally known in India, adds glitter to Indian sweets, betel nut (Supari), Paan (betel-leaf), and fruits. It is also used in Ayurvedic medicines. The silver-topped sweet is even served as prashad in many temples and on auspicious and religious occasions. Varakh is also used in flavoured syrups as in Kesar (saffron) syrup. If one observes Varakh under a microscope one will find traces of blood, stools and saliva of a cattle or an ox. Varakh is not derived from an animal source.

However, a crucial material of animal origin, ox-gut, is used in its manufacture. This ox-gut is obtained from the slaughter house. The intestine (ox-gut), smeared with blood and mucus, is pulled out from the slaughtered animal by the butcher at the slaughterhouse, and sold for the specific purpose. This is then taken away to be cleaned and used in the manufacture of Varakh. The gut of an average cow, measuring 540 inches in length and 3 inches in diameter, is cut open into a piece measuring 540" x 10". From this, strips of 9" x 10" are cut to give approximately 60 pieces of ox-gut, which are then piled on top of each other and bound to form a book of 171 leaves. Next, small thin strips of silver are placed between the sheets and the book slipped into a leather pouch. These bundles are hammered continuously for a day to produce extremely thin foils of silver of 3" x 5".The leather and ox-gut, being supple, can withstand the intense manual hammering for up to 8 hours a day till such time as the silver is beaten to the desired thickness. When ready, the foil is carefully lifted from between the leaves of ox-gut and placed between sheets of paper to be sold to the sweet shops. A booklet of 160 foils weighs approximately 10 grams and costs few hundred rupees. To make a single booklet of 171 sheets, the guts of 3 cows are used. And the yield per book is generally 160 foils of silver, the rest of which may be damaged or unfit for use. Thus one book, used on an average of 300 days of the year yields approximately 48,000 foils of silver which means that each ox-gut yields an estimated 16,000 foils. The leather used for the pouch to hold the book (made from ox-gut), is cowhide or calf leather, and uses about 232 sq. inches of material. Assuming the size of an average cowhide to be 18 sq. ft or 2,600 sq. Inches, the yield per hide will be approximately 10 leather pouches. Usually 4 foils are used per kilograms of sweets and the ox-gut of one cow is used to produce foil for approximately 4,000 kilograms of sweets. It is estimated that the average consumption of sweets by a middle class family of four in India is about 100 kilograms per year. Thus, an average middle class Indian family of four consuming approximately 100 kg of sweets per year for forty years consumes silver foil produced with the gut of 3 cows and one-tenth of a cow hide in India 275 tons of silver is transformed into Varakh that utilises the intestines of 516,000 cows and calf leather of 17,200 animals each year.

Delivering the keynote address, Kapil Sibal said leaders in the media and entertainment industry and outside need to understand the meaning of democracy and the idea of India. Reiterating the Times Group's core philosophy of neutrality, Vineet Jain said, "We have no political masters; nor do we have any hidden agenda. If there's anybody's side we take, it is that of our readers." Jain ended his speech by saying, "We need to unite as an industry to resist attempts by governments and other authorities to trespass on the freedom of media, often behind the smokescreen of regulation. JAIN FOUNDATION SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH CELLULAR DYNAMICS TO CREATE IPSC LINES

4th Dec, 2013, The Jain Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to cure muscular dystrophies caused by dysferlin protein deficiency, announced the signing of a Master Service Agreement with Cellular Dynamics International. CDI will create five induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from patients with these dystrophies. As there are currently no effective treatments for these genetic disorders, establishing model iPSC lines is an important step toward developing new drugs and therapies for these patients.

Dysferlin is a protein thought to be involved in skeletal muscle repair. Genetic defects in the gene that codes for the protein result in two types of muscular dystrophy: Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2B (LGMD2B) and Miyoshi muscular dystrophy 1 (MMD1). Symptoms include weakness and progressive muscle wasting, and onset typically occurs in young adults. CDI will employ their My Cell (R) Products line to create LGMD2B/Miyoshi patient-derived iPSC lines. iPSC technology is based on reprogramming adult cells to a pluripotent stem cell state, whereby the resulting iPSCs, and the somatic cells derived from them, carry the genotypic backgrounds of the original donors and model the disease. A primary goal of the Jain Foundation is to use these disease models for drug discovery.

About the Jain Foundation - The Jain Foundation is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to cure muscular dystrophies caused by dieseling protein deficiency, which includes the clinical presentations Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2B (LGMD2B) and Miyoshi muscular dystrophy 1 (MMD1). The foundation is privately funded and does not solicit funding from patients or other sources. The Foundation's focused strategy includes funding and actively monitoring the progress of scientific research projects in key pathways towards a cure, providing financial and logistical support to promising drug candidates to accelerate them to clinical trials, funding clinical trials and studies, encouraging collaboration among scientists, and educating LGMD2B/Miyoshi patients about their disease and helping them with their diagnosis (e.g., funding dysferlin protein and gene mutational analysis).

VIVEK JAIN TO FIGHT FOR MUMBAI TURF CLUB CHAIRMANSHIP

Dec, 11, Pune Until recently, it used to be a one-man race at the Royal Western India Turf Club elections. But not any more. The stage is set for the ‘derby’ with incumbent chief Khushroo Dhunjibhoy and the former Chairman Vivek Jain gunning for the chairman’s post in the 98th Annual General Body Meeting scheduled at Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai on December 17.

Ten candidates are in the fray for this prestigious election. According to members, this election would be a very close call unlike in the previous three years wherein it was just a formality. Jaydev Mody, Ram Shroff, Shyam Ruia and Shivlal Daga form the Dhunjibhoy lobby. Dhunjibhoy’s tenure for the next 12 months will be decided by the 2000-odd members who will caste their votes. Former chairman Vivek Jain, who could not make it to the chair in the last elections, admitted that this year it will be different and a close call. “We had all our four members garnering maximum votes, but unfortunately we could not get the magic figure of five,” said Jain, who has roped in G. Vahanvaty, the club’s steward, in his camp. Meanwhile, this year’s election will be held after the AGM unlike last year when the members cast their votes while the meeting was still on.
