Tapasya (complete abstinence from food and sometimes also from water)

Tapasya dates from ancient days in the Jain tradition. The Terapanth Dharm Sangh has a creditable record of long and rigorous tapasya, i.e. completion of the fourth phase of langusingh nikridit tap, bhadrotar tap, mahabhadrotar tap, ayambil's terahmasi (eating only one thing a day continuously for 13 months), a twelvemonth-long fast depending only on achh (the water obtained after straining the boiled whey).
