Preksha Dhyana: Therapeutic Thinking: [2] Exercise For Acquiring The Virtue Of Self-Reliance

Published: 10.03.2010

Self-reliance is a positive virtue for achieving self-sufficiency and success in life. One must not look forward to help from others except when it is absolutely essential. In other words, self-help is the best help and one should rely upon one's own resources as far as possible. To fulfil one's necessities of life one has to perform many chores and one must make it a habit to perform these himself. Well-to-do people generally consider ti below their dignity to do manual work. But this is really a wrong and harmful notion. It is often seen that children of such people remain physically and mentally dependent on others, and suffer in their later life. Love for labour should, therefore, be firmly inculcated in children to make them self-reliant in life.

Relying upon others will inhibit the development of one's own strength and competency. This is true for both physical as well as psychological fields. If one runs to others for getting help for solving common problems, one will never develop psychological self-reliance. On the other hand, if one applies his mind to a problem, one would, in course of time, develop self-reliance.
