Mahavira's Scripture Of Health: [05.01] Who Is Ill? (Rugna Kauri)

Happiness and unhappiness are the two main phenomena of life. Health is very closely related to happiness. It is said that happiness is of varied kinds. One of them is health. Unhappiness is also said to be of many kinds. One of them is disease. Health is happiness, disease is unhappiness.

Since disease means unhappiness, no one wishes to have any disease. The question is: Although no one wishes to be ill, why dose he fall ill? Which organ of his body is affected by the disease? The question we have to consider is whether we can regard the organ and the body with that organ as distinct. Should we regard them as absolutely distinct from all points of view? Who is ill? The organ or the one to whom that organ belongs? This question cannot be answered by taking one-sided view. From the non-absolute point of view, the organ and the one whose organ it is cannot be separated, nor they can be regarded as one.
