Protect your atma (soul), this is an instructive sentence.
Without spiritual practice, the order cannot be internalised.

The first sutra for spiritual practice - draw the senses inwards.
When the senses are used as sources of knowledge, then they can be drawn inwards.

When they succumb to attachment however, the atma cannot be protected, nor can the person be protected.
Restraining and drawing inward the senses functions the same way as the blinkers, which keeps a horse on track.
