Acharya Tulsi - A Peacemaker Par Excellence: Unfavourable Reactions

Published: 09.05.2013

Every progressive step arouses some reaction among the people opposed to change. When Acharyashree took a leap forward, he had to face tough resistance from vested interests. Some people rose against him on account of his growing popularity as a dynamic Acharya. In 1949 an agitation was launched to forestall the Deeksha ceremony of a child. They incited people against Acharyashree on flimsy grounds. Throughout the period of agitation Acharyashree remained calm and unruffled. He set an extraordinary example of courage and nonviolence.

Later we found the communal forces fomenting trouble at Raipur and Churu. These agitations turned violent but subsided automatically on account of Acharyashree's refusal to be provoked. Internally too he had to face great opposition from the orthodox monks of the order when he decided to abandon some old practices which impeded spiritual progress. Some shravaks also joined hands with the extreme fundamentalists. But Acharyashree met the challenge effectively. It was the victory of nonviolence.
