Nandishwar Dwip

The 'continent of rejoicing', where the gods come together to celebrate festivities, is the eighth dwip. At the four cardinal points stand the four mountains of antimony (anjana) which are crowned by sanctuaries of the Siddhas. Additionally, there is one Anjanagiri mountain in the centre of this Dwip. To the east is Dev Raman, to the south is Nityadyoth, to the west is Swyam prabh and to the north is an area named Anjangiri. On the center top of this mountain is Siddhatan (Shri Jina bhavan). It is 100 yojan long, 50 yojan in breadth and 72 yojan tall.

To the north, south, east and west of each of the Anjanagiris extend four lakes called Nanda (sixteen in all), between which four pairs of mountains rise up. These are the 32 Ratikara mountains, depicted here with the palaces of the chief wives of the sovereign gods on their four cardinal points (see Fig. 1).

Nandishwar contains 52 main sanctuaries, 13 in each of the four directions. In particular there is one on the summit of each of the four Anjana mountains. The plates (Fig. 2 and 3) show besides the interior of the temple (where there is a pedestal bearing statues of the Tirthankars), the four doors open to the four cardinal points. In front of them are four entrance halls, in front of which are four entertainment halls. In front of these there is a stūpa ornamented with statues of the Jinas, with a tree, a flagpole, and auspicious emblems.

In front of the Anjanagiris spread out the wonderful Nanda lakes, four in each direction, with their forests of particular types of trees determined precisely by where they are planted.
