Three antique Jain idols unearthed from building site

TNN Sep 22, 2011, 04.57am IST

AHMEDABAD: A common construction site in Shantinagar society in Usmanpura drew many curious visitors on Wednesday morning with the sudden appearance of three eight-feet-tall Jain idols.

Religious heads and residents from nearby thronged the site to perform poojas and later chalked out a plan to install them in a community hall nearby. Jain priests Harihant Sagarji and Muni Padmajit Sagarji who were present at the spot claimed that the idols may be four hundred years old and its makers had hidden the statues during an attack by the Mughal army.

The priests also claimed that the idols were made by artisans from Khambat and were being transported into the city. However, the state archeology department had a completely different version to tell. Scientists claimed that the three idols were incomplete and looked similar. The chisel work suggested that it could not be more than 100 years old. "Idols of this size were normally constructed near a temple site.

The idols seem incomplete as the artisans have not carved the vehicles of the tirthankars and specific signs on the idol's body that can help devotees identify the revered gods.

The artisans may have left the idols for some reason which is not known yet," says director of state archeology department Y S Rawat. But Muni Padmajit claimed, "Similar Jain idols are present in Sambhav Nath ni Khadki in Zaveriwad area in the walled city which are smaller in size compared to the ones found at this site. We believe that the idols were being brought for a new Jain temple and that they were hidden fearing attacks." Virendra Shah who owned a bungalow at the site for many years had sold the property to Anil Patel, a builder, for a residential apartment scheme at the site.

It was during the digging to lay the foundation at the site that the idols were revealed. "The foundation of the bungalow was just one metre deep, while the idols were found four metres deep. There was no way that Shah could have known about the presence of the idols," say a resident - Parmanand Purohit.

Women with diamond jewellery, kids in school uniforms, hot shorts, skirts and more, and men, who had rushed out of their offices to get a glimpse of something ‘extraordinary’, and maharaj saheb were seen chanting and then pondering on what next could possibly be found from the ground below. Looked like utter chaos on the International Day for Peace!

This is not a hindi movie scene from 70s, but ground realities of Shantinagar Society at Usmanpura, as seen on Wednesday noon.

People walked and ran towards, ‘Anusmruti’, the site wherein three life-size idols of Jain deities were found. However, this site apparently belongs to Dr Virendra Shah and earlier the name of the site was ‘5, Laxmi Narayan Society’.

If maharaj saheb, Panyas Arihant Sagar is to be believed, then these statues are 500 years old. He said, “All these statues belong to the ‘Shwetambar’ sect of the Jain religion and are likely to be at least 500 years old. We have found three statues each of 7.5 feet height.”

Jayanti Gandhi, joint secretary, Shantinagar Shwetambar Murti Pujak Sangh said, "We were in a lecture at the derasar nearby when a woman informed us about these statues. She said that she had seen a white head, as men dug the surface. We immediately rushed to the spot and found the three statues.

These will now be taken to the Shantinagar Jain Upasna, cleaned with abhishek and we will conduct puja and then check if it requires any repair." The woman who first saw these statues was Peenal Hardik Shah, a resident of Shyam flats, whose house balcony faces the site.

However, by the time the statues could be taken for Abhishek, puja and offerings had already begun, when flocks of people crowded the statues. People were seen touching the feet, head, and pedestal of the statues to receive god's blessings. Mud from which the statues were extracted was also taken home by 'devotees' for blessings of a lifetime.
