Attachment and hatred are the causes of karma....
Karma is the root of birth and death.
Wise men say that the cycle of birth and death
is the cause of unhappiness.
(UTTARADHYAYANA SUTRA)
According to Jain cosmology, these paintings illustrate the entire network of life cycles in various regions of the universe, which is a direct result of one's karma -actions of body, speech and mind.
Human existence is in the centre of this cosmic universe. Human being oscillates between the upper and the lower realms time and again. In order to liberate oneself from this network one should become free from karma. This can happen by following the right knowledge, right faith and right conduct.
The purpose of such paintings is to help people easily understand that this vast cosmos, where transmigrations and reincarnations of all beings takes place, can be comprehended by human beings through their spiritual and worldly practices.
The soul after attaining absolute purity through incessant efforts during various cycles of rebirth, can reach right to the summit of this cosmos, which is called the Siddhashila, the seat of the supreme liberated souls.
