APOWA - Action for Protection of Wild Animals


Observation of World Environment Day (5th June 2010)


Green Rally organized by APOWA

For the last ten years, Action for Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA) has been organizing various programmes on the occasion of World Environment Day. This year too APOWA in partnership with Bhitarkanika Mangrove Division, Mahakalpara Range has been observed the World Environment Day 2010 in association with the communities of Narasinghpur village under Rajnagar block of Kendrapara district, Orissa, who are also the victims of natural disasters and the impacts of climate change. We have undertake appropriate programs as per UNEP themes on “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.” As 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity, a series of activities and events, such as consultation with communities, plantation drives and cycle rallies organized throughout the day on 5th June 2010.

 

Armed with placards and banners, over 500 students participated in the green rally in the morning. They urged the people to plant trees and save biodiversity. This was (Green Rally organized by APOWA) followed by an educational programme by students with the special educational packet produced by Zoo Outreach Organization for International Year of Biodiversity. A public meeting was also held at Narasinghpur village with the participation of villagers, school students and teachers. The public meeting was attended by Dr. Mihir Pattnaik, Range officer, Mahakalpara range under Rajnagar Mangrove Division, Shri Hemanta Kumar Rout, environmentalist and teacher, Shri Mahanta Ku Mallick, Forester, Shri Bijaya Kumar Kabi, Director, APOWA, Shri Satyabrata Panda, Project Coordinator, APOWA, Shri Akshya Kumar Sahoo, teacher, Shri Ramaranjan Mallick, Chale Chalo, Shri Manamohan Kundu, APOWA as resource persons. This was followed by a plantation drive campaign with the active participation of villagers and eco club students.
