Be The Change

Dear Colleagues

In 2000, all UN Member States declared that they would spare no effort to achieve the eight Millennium Development Goals. These goals included halving world poverty, putting all children into school and halving the number of people without access to drinking water and ensure environmental sustainability, all by 2015.

Lord Mahavira preached about the environment in the first book of 'Acharanga Sutra', which is accepted, as His direct words. The elements of nature were described as living beings and under the fundamental principle of AHIMSA these were to be protected in all ways - no waste, no overuse, no abuse, no polluting. If we follow these principles, then we would stop destroying our environment as well as preserve the resources that are available for all to share. If there are more resources available for all, then the poor will also get a fair share thereof.

On 25th September 2008, British Prime Minister Mr. Gordon Brown is going to call for action at the United Nations so that each member country as well as non-governmental organisations, corporations and individuals WILL MOBILISE THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS and to do more to deliver by adopting any of the alternatives in 'BE THE CHANGE' flyer attached. We the Indic faith groups would like to show our commitment to these goals and are therefore requesting you to be the part of that change. Kindly display the flyer on your notice board or distribute free to members of your community or organization by reprinting it or by word of mouth.

By following any one or all the three alternatives in the flyer, we would have done a service to all the living beings and thus implemented the fundamental Jain way of living.
On the occasion of approaching Paryushan Parva this would be an ideal message to promote. Could you also please advise us as to how many members in your community or organization would have familiarised with the message contained on the flyer.
