About

Prof. emeritus Dr. Adalbert J. Gail held the chair on History of Indian Art at Freie Universität Berlin until he went in retirement in 2006. He is still one of the leading experts in the field of Indian art and archaeology.

Brief vita:
  • 1968 PhD in Indology from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
  • 1972/72 Assistant Professor at Museum für Indische Kunst Berlin (Museum of Indian Art Berlin, since 2006 Museum of Asian Art Berlin).
  • 1978 Habilitation (postdoctural lecture qualification, venia legendi) in Indology (Sanskrit) and History of South Asian Art at Freie Universität Berlin.
  • 1974-2006 Professor of Indian Art History at Freie Universität Berlin.
  • 1989-1991 Dean of Department of Classical and Anciend Studies.
  • since 1995 Professor at Institute of South and Central Asia of Univerzita Karlova v Praze (Charles University Prague).
  • since 2006 Visiting Lecturer at South Asian Art History Center at Department of Art History of Freie Universität Berlin.
  • Co-founder and member of Advisory Board of Center for Jaina Studies at Freie Universität Berlin.

  • Iconography of Buddhism and Hinduism.
  • Art and Archaeology of Nepal.
  • Sculptural Art of Bangladesh.
  • Buddhism in Orissa.
