Veganism is Jainism

For most others who are not Jains, the word “non-violence” is the first word that comes to their mind when they hear or think about Jainism. Tirthankar Bhagvant emphasized on a rather all-encompassing theory of “Samta”. Samta (equanimity towards all souls) is one of the most important and extraordinary strength of Jainism. No other religion has mentioned it in the way that Jainism has. Naturally, Non-Violence is one of the expected and prime outcomes of Samta (Sam-bhav).

Every moment in our life is undulating (Visham). Any difficult situation or even an ordinary event makes us very uncomfortable, yet we are not aware of it. If we think carefully, soon we will know, our whole life consists of reactions to things, people and circumstances. As JAINs (Shravaks), our first obligation is to make ourselves balanced, i.e. to (try to) remain in samta. While doing so, we try to live a life that supports compassion towards all souls. Here in this part of the world, our obligation is to continue this practice while fulfilling our normal professional and personal commitments. Plant-Based Lifestyle/Veganism is one that allows for the most practical options to live a normal lifestyle without compromising our beliefs of compassion and equanimity towards all souls.

Jain communities in India, North America and other parts of the world are elated and inspired to learn that the JCSC (Jain Center of Southern California) has become the first such JAIN organization that will only serve Plant Based Food. Many of us often wonder and question about Plant Based Diet. Most often our concerns are about (a) how it is related to religion (compassion, non-violence, etc.), and (b) why it is a healthier choice. In order to spread the awareness, JCSC has created a video that explains "Why Veganism is Jainism". This video includes thoughts and explanation from many of our own JCSC community members and including those who are already practicing Plant-Based Diet. We hope that you will view this entire video and will also support JCSC’s mission to promote Plant Based Diet.

Wellness Challenge - Walk A Total Of 5 Miles

For the upcoming weekly challenge, we are challenging the participants to “Walk a Total of 5 Miles." Walking is the easiest, safety, and least expensive. It can also be the most fun, especially on a fine day, with a good companion and an enticing goal a few miles away. On City streets or in the woods, walking is the best way to experience a landscape. If it’s rainy, you can always walk in the mall or use a treadmill. A brisk walk burns nearly as many calories as running the same distance at a moderate pace and confers similar health benefits.
