PETITION DRIVE TO STOP KILLING OF DEER IN ANN ARBOR CITY PARKS, MI, USA
Dear Jain Community:
We respectfully request your prompt and overwhelming response to an online petition drive launched in November 2017 to protest the killing of 350 deer which will occur this 2017 winter by Order of the City Council of Ann Arbor, MI in a dozen of the city’s parks and neighborhoods, and even on the University of Michigan’s campus where many Jain students live or study.

The members of Lighthouse Center in Whitmore Lake, MI (a group of about 300 American Jains who are disciples of Gurudev Chitrabhanu and Pramodaben for many years), Humane Society and few other Jain residents in Ann Arbor (including a past JAINA Regional VP) have been involved in a protest movement known as Friends of Ann Arbor Wildlife in Nature (FAAWN) to urge the City and gather local public’s support to (a) stop these deer culls in city parks and neighborhoods where people and pets would be in danger; and (b) adopt and pay for non-lethal ways such as sterilizing the female deer or not growing types of plants that attract the deer in the first place. FAAWN’s main reasoning to Stop The Shoot is that All Lives Are Precious (what Lord Mahavir said in his deshna).  Hence, this short-sighted killing mentality is an unnecessary waste of lives, and unjustified just because humans can’t change their gardening methods and driving habits. The multi-sensed deer are peaceful, higher-order intellect, sentient, feeling and gregarious animals that should be allowed to co-exist with humans in the city’s beautiful parks and neighborhoods.

THE URGENT NEED:
We need to get as many people as possible to sign it. When they do, it is automatically sent to the Mayor and City Council. We are hoping that a large number of petitions will convince the City to stop the needless killing of deer.

Please click and sign the above petition, and pass the link on to your groups and anyone who you think would sign it. There is no cost, and one does not have to live in Ann Arbor, or Michigan or even the USA. Wouldn’t it be great if the City heard from people around the country or the world?! Can we Jains respond in unison and also get thousands of responses submitted in a short amount of time?

BACKGROUND:
These deer culls began in 2015 winter at the request of a handful of residents who complained that deer were consuming their flowers and plants; a few residents also complained of deer-car collisions, yet the City administration did not do anything to post street signs about deer crossing or mandate slower driving speeds, choosing instead to simply hire sharp-shooters to shoot-away the problem annually!

Your help with the petition will greatly strengthen the resolve that Gurudev’s disciples have taken and show them that Jains worldwide stand with FAAWN. Many of the Lighthouse Center members regularly attend JAINA Conventions, and we want to set an example for our Jain youth to speak up when there is injustice in the world against the speechless.”

The unnecessary shootings of deer in Ann Arbor have greatly divided the citizens and created a lot of negative emotions, and the community needs to heal and unite.
