Diwali Program At JCSC - Oct 18 - 20, 2017

Diwali has a very special significance in Jainism. It marks the anniversary of Nirvana or liberation of Mahavira's soul. Mahavira attained Moksha (liberation) on this day at Pawapuri on 15 October 527 BC, on Chaturdashi of Kartika. The chief disciple of MahaviraGanadhara Gautam Swami also attained Kevala Jñāna thus making Diwali a very important Jain festival. On Diwali morning Nirvan Ladoo is offered after praying to Lord Mahavira in all Jain temples across the world. The most important principle of Jains is Ahinsa or non violence, thus they tend to avoid firecrackers. Diwali is celebrated in atmosphere of austerity, simplicity, serenity, equity, calmness, charity, philanthropy and environment consciousness. Jain temples, homes, offices, shops are decorated with lights and diyas. Relatives distribute sweets to each other. In temples and homes, devotees sing and chant hymns and mantras from Jain religious texts in praise of the Tirthankar.

The Jain year starts with Pratipada, the day after Diwali.

Gyan Panchmi Program - Oct 25, 2017

Gyan Panchmi is celebrated 5 days after Diwali and is also known as Laabh Pancham.

It is the day of appreciating acquired/collected knowledge in every form and holy books.

A lot of people also observe fast by keeping silence (Maun).

This is an auspicious day for those who want to start Pancham with Fasting.

This year Gyan Panchmi is on Wednesday, Oct 25, 2017

We will have Gyan Pujan and Gautam Swami Sthapana at Derasar at 9:30 AM for anyone who wishes to perform Puja. Dev Vandan will follow after Puja.

Kartiki Punam & Pat Darshan (actual Sat,Nov 4th, 2017, observed-Sun Nov 5th, 2017)

Kartiki Punam night is considered as the brightest full moon night in the whole year as the rainy season is supposed to end and night sky is all clear.

This is the day to resolve to free oneself of basic instincts.

In the rainy/monsoon season, all Acharya Bhagvants, Sadhus, Sadhvis, Munis etc stay at one place and do not travel for four months.

This starts from Aso Sud Chaturdashi and ends on Kartik Sud Punam.

After Kartik Punam, their vihar starts again to spread the knowledge of Principles of Jainism such as Truth, Ahimsa, and Compassion etc.

Thus, Kartiki Punam has a big significance for all Jains.

We will have Kartiki Punam Celebration on two days as below:

Day/Date Time Program

Saturday, 4th Nov, 2017(Kartiki Punam actual day)

9:30 AM Pat Darshan in Cultural hall

Sunday, 5th Nov, 2017(Kartiki Punam observed)

Q. Why kalyanak days are important?

It's Tirthankar Bhagwan's Kalyanak. Read attached “opportunity cost” to remind ourselves how difficult and precious it is to have these auspicious days coming up in any life, let alone this life.

Q. What’s so special about Girnar?
It is hard to describe in words, but read attached document 'Girnar excerpts from scriptures' to get you started.

Q. What should I do?
First of all reserve as much time as possible on those days. There is no limit to what you can do. Here are some suggestions to get you thinking….any combination of...
Utkrustha Abhishek Pooja | Praxal Pooja | Snatra pooja | Astha prakari Pooja | chaitya vandan | navakar vali / jaap | kalayanak aradhana vidhi | Samayik | swadhyay | Girnar Bhaav Yatra | evening bhaavana | pratikraman | paushadh etc.
Chauvihar/ratri bhojan tyag the day before | navakarshi/porshi/saadh porashi/biyasanu/ekasanu/ayambil/upvas on the day of kalyanak.

There may be special ceremony at your local derasar, if not you can initiate/arrange something special. Take family & friends with you, especially kids & parents.

5) New Documentary about Gandhi and Ahimsa to be Shown at India Conference in Pomona

I want to inform you about our new documentaries on Gandhi,“Gandhi’s Gift,” and “Gandhi’s Awakening.”  They are the first majors films on Gandhi made in the U.S.  Both will be broadcast by American Public Television on PBS next year (2018).

We believe that the world needs Gandhi’s life message of ahimsa NOW more than ever before!

I will be in Pomona on Friday, Nov. 3, 5:15 p.m., presenting one of these films about Gandhi’s final years, “Gandhi’s Gift,” at Cal State Polytechnic Univ. Pomona.  The film and discussion afterward will be a part of the "India at 70:  Toward a More Inclusive Democracy” Conference sponsored by the Ahimsa Center.  Here is a Trailer (3:09):  https://vimeo.com/184897141 .

You may be aware of this Conference because of your proximity to Pomona, but I wanted to personally invite you and other members of your Center to my program.  I think you and your members would be interested in this film.  Plus, I would love to meet you and discuss the possibility of a screening at a later time of one or both of our Gandhi films as an Event at your Center.  I often present our films and lead discussions or workshops.  Recently, I presented “Gandhi’s Gift” at Univ. of Illinois with Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi (Center for Middle East & South Asian Studies), Portland Community College, Johnson County Community College), Wayne State University (Peace and Conflict Studies), MultiFaith Council of NW Ohio (Toledo), Citizens For Peace (Detroit), Center for Spiritual Living (Overland Park), etc.

“Gandhi’s Awakening” shows Gandhi’s 21 transformative years in South Africa as he develops satyagraha and decides to embrace aspects ofahimsaaparigraha and anekantavada into his life and work.  Trailer (2:42):  https://vimeo.com/191164953  .

I recently presented “Gandhi’s Gift” at Rice University, sponsored by the Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance, where it was very well-received.  Afterward, Dr. Sulekh Jain, former Pres. of Jaina, whom you probably know, introduced himself to me and thanked me for my program.  We have since spoken about me presenting another program in Houston and perhaps one in Delhi.

For a long time we as Producers have appreciated the close connection between Gandhi and his Jain mentor, Shrimad Rajchandra.  There is a scene about this connection in our previous film, “Globalized Soul.”  That film also includes extensive footage from Shatrunjaya, where we were privileged to film while in Palitana, filming the  Ratna Nidhi Humanitarian Camp, then directed by Mahendra and Asha Mehta, whom you may also know.  There is some of this footage in “Gandhi’s Awakening."
