There was this close friend of mine who was doing Engineering from Bhopal. He used to come home every Saturday. We spent most of the Sundays together. One day we sat at around 12 noon & kept chatting for a long time. We didn’t realize when the clock hit five O’clock. Mother called us - “You don’t want to eat or what?” Then we realized how long we had been chatting. After he left, everyone at home said - “Your friend has reached a good place so his dressing has become very impressive. He was wearing a very nice shirt today.” I was surprised. I didn’t even notice this. We were chatting for five hours & I didn’t even notice what kind of clothes he was wearing. This was pure love, purity of the soul.
When we are filled with the divine love (love of soul) & have risen above physical/carnal attractions it is called as Bramhacharya. Shree Jainenedra Kumar has written - “I consider my father’s life partner as ‘mother’, & now even my children’s mother appears to me as ‘mother’.” When our feelings become so pure that we feel this then that’s what we call Brahmacharya.
Ba(Wife of Gandhiji) & Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi) were sitting in some assembly. Someone asked Bapu about Ba - “It seems she’s your mother.” Bapu remained silent for a while but then said - “Yes, she is my mother.” The followers/activists present there started laughing & said “Bapu why are you saying like that? Ba is your life partner.” Bapu said “She’s my life partner but now she is more like a mother to me. She wakes me up in the morning, gets my clothes ready, gives me food & then makes me sleep at night; so isn’t she like my mother.”
We always read in Pooja.
'संसार में विषबेल नारी, तज गये जोगिश्वारा.' (Women is like a poisonous wine; even the almighty gave up)
People call this line as inappropriate & oppose it. But the composer didn’t write anything inappropriate. He wrote ‘woman is like a poisonous wine’; he didn’t write ‘mother is like a poisonous wine’; he didn’t write ‘daughter is like a poisonous wine’. ‘Woman’ here is the name given to our own lusts & longings otherwise she is someone’s mother, someone’s daughter, & someone’s sister. The writer is very clear - the woman in his writing is our lust that we have to give up; there is no other meaning that this line should convey. We look at a very surface level & enjoy condoning the work.
Brahmacharya is about inner feelings
There is an example of Budhdha’s life to explain this. A young monk and an elderly monk from Budhdha’s followers were passing by the river side. They saw that a lady was drowning in the river & asking for help. So the young monk jumped into the river & saved that lady. That lady thanked him & left. But the elder monk got really unhappy with this. He said “Hey you have touched that woman & broke your bachelorhood. I’ll tell this to Gautam Budhdha & ask him to punish you.” When they reached to Budhdha the monk said “Lord! This young monk shall be punished.” “Why?” asked Budhdha. The old monk said “He touched a woman while taking her out of the river. Now he has lost his chastity & bachelorhood. Therefore he shall be punished for repentance/ penance.” To this Budhdha said “First you take a punishment for penance.” “What should I repent for?” he asked with surprise.
Budhdha said “He saved that woman & left her there only. But you have brought her here in your mind. She is still there in your mind. You are carrying her for so long. He left her there & forgot about it.”
Acharyas have given four directives for purity of thoughts:
1. Always keep your mind pure.
2. Win your senses.
3. Always be in good companionship.
4. Involve yourself in God’s prayer (Bhakti-Prarthana)
Brahmcharya is nothing but the purity/faithfulness of relations and of our thoughts. Wish we all will have purer thoughts and make our lives better.

हमारा एक बहुत प्यारा मित्र था. वह भोपाल में इंजीनियरिंग कॉलेज में पड़ता था और हर शनिवार को शाम को घर आता था. हम लोग रविवार एकसाथ बिताता थे. एक दिन दोपहर 12 बजे से बैठें हम लोग बातें करते- करते शाम 5 बज गए. माँ ने आवाज दी - ‘क्यूँ? खाना -वाना नहीं खाना क्या?’ तब ध्यान आया की हम लोग कितने घण्टों से बातें कर रहें थे | उसके जाने के बाद घर के लोग कहने लगे - ‘तुम्हारा मित्र अब बड़ी जगह पहुँच गया है तो उसने बढ़िया- अच्छे कपडे बनवायें है, आज तो बड़ी अच्छी शर्ट पहना था वह |
मुझे बहुत आश्चर्य हुआ, मेरा तो ध्यान ही नहीं गया, हम लोग 5 घण्टें तक बातें करते रहे, लेकिन वह कौनसा -कैसे कपडे पहने हुआ है इसकी तरफ मेरा ध्यान ही नहीं गया | यह आत्मनुराग था, देहासक्ति नहीं थी. हम जब आत्मनुराग से भर गये हो, देहाशक्ति से ऊपर उठ गये हो, वह ब्रह्मचर्ये है.
साहित्यकार जैनेन्द्रकुमार ने लिखा है - 'हम अपने पिता की जीवनसाथी को माँ मानते है और अब तो बच्चो की माँ भी ‘माँ’ मालूम पड़ने लगी है’ यह हमारा ब्रह्मचर्य है |बा और बापू दोनों एक सभा में बैठे थे | किसी ने बापू से बा के बारे में पूंछा की - ‘ लगता है ये आपकी माँ है ’ बापू क्षणभर तो चुप रहे फिर कहा -‘हाँ ये मेरी माँ है ‘. वहां जो कार्य-कर्ता बैठे थे उनको जोर की हँसी आ गयी, वे कहने लगे - ‘बापू, ऐसा क्यूँ कह रहे है? बा तो आपकी जीवनसाथी है.’ बापू बोले - ‘जीवनसाथी तो है ये हमारी लेकिन अब ये हमारी माँ ज्यादा हो गयी है. सवेरे हमें जगाती है, हमारे कपड़ो की व्यवस्था करती है, भोजन कराती है और फिर रात में सुलाती है, तो हमारी यह माँ हुईं की नही?’
'संसार में विषबेल नारी, तज गये जोगिश्वारा.' - इस पंक्ति को लोगो ने पीडादायक बताया जबकि लिखनेवाले ने ठीक ही तो लिखा है - 'संसार में विषबेल नारी', उसने 'संसार में विषबेल माँ', ' संसार में विषबेल बेटी' तो नहीं लिखा. 'नारी' मेरी अपनी वासना है वर्ना तो वह किसी की माँ है, किसी की बेटी है, किसी की बहिन है, सिर्फ मैंने अपनी वासना से जो रूप उसे दे दिया है उसके इलावा और कोई रूप नहीं है उसे तजने का कितना स्पस्ट सा अर्थ है लेकिन लोग बहुत स्थूल अर्थ लेते है इस चीजो का और निषेद करने में अपने को बड़ा मानते है
ब्रह्मचर्य अन्तरंग परिणामो की बात है.: बुद्ध के संघ का एक उदाहरण है- एक वृद्ध भिक्षु और एक युवा भिक्षु दोनों नदी किनारे से चले जा रहे थे. तभी उन्होंने देखा की एक बहन नदी में डूब रही है और बचाओ-बचाओ के लिए आवाज दे रही है. वह युवा भिक्षु तुंरत नदी में खुदा और बहन को नदी से बहार निकल लाया. उसने बचा लिया उस बहन को. इतने में वृद्ध भिक्षु गरम हो गये - 'अरे, तुमने उस महिला को छु लिया! अब मै तुम्हे बुद्ध से कहूँगा और तुम्हे दंड/ प्रायश्चित दिलवाऊंगा ' दोनों बुद्ध के सामने पहुंचे. वृद्ध भिक्षु ने कहा - 'भंते! इसको दंड मिलना चाहिए'. बुद्द ने पूंछा -'क्यूँ?' वृद्ध भिक्षु ने कहा- 'इस बात का की इसने युवती को उठाकर नदी से बहार रखा, इसने उसे छु लिया, इसका ब्रह्मचर्य नहीं रहा. इसलिए इसे प्रायश्चित मिलना चाहिये.' बुद्ध ने कहा - 'प्रायश्चित पहले तुम ले लो'. 'मैं, मैं किस बात का प्रायश्चित लूँ? विस्मय से पूंछा उन्होंने. बुद्ध ने कहा - 'इसने तो उस महिला को उठाकर वहा ही रख दिया पर तुम तो उसे अपने मानस में उठाकर यहाँ तक ले आये. तुम्हारे मन में अभी भी है वह, तुम इतनी देर से उसे ढो रहे हो. इसने तो वहां रखा और भूल भी गया.'
