| | | | | | | | The world is more complicated than ever. Public and political opinions are trending towards polarization. We are split apart by our views on controversial and non controversial topics alike. However, through the power of language, we can transform this state into good. Diverse perspectives are necessary in order to promote change in any established system - whether it be your school and your country. They are an essential part of our daily lives as well.
The principle of Anekantvad translates literally into "many-sidedness,” reflecting the importances of multiple viewpoints. Each individual’s perspective is fragmented, but when they are bridged together, they form the ultimate and complete truth. Rather than having Pravana (absolute knowledge), we have Naya (point of view knowledge). To be correct, our statements must be conditional. This hesitancy is not a weakness - it is acceptance and understanding. None of us are able to see the entire big picture, no matter how hard we try. It is only by working together and sharing our knowledge - whether it be through debate or conversation - that we can reach the greater good. This principle extends to religious as well as social tolerance.
Jainism encourages us to consider the viewpoints of others - especially if they are different from our own. While it may be easy to only consider viewpoints that agree with ours, if we do so, we remain confined within a dark and narrow hallway. Each time we consider the perspectives of others, a door or window is opened. The ultimate goal is for all perspectives to be welcomed - the hallway becomes an open field exposed to a multi-faceted orb: the light of knowledge.
