WEDNESDAY 21ST DECEMBER 2016

From our Chairman: Steve Killelea

Change is all around us. It’s an integral part of our world in general, and paradoxically, it has been one of the constants at the Institute for Economics and Peace as we have grown throughout the years.

2016 has seen us continue to expand our existing initiatives and develop expertise in new research areas. We have engaged in stimulating new educational programs, as well as deepening our research outputs to include the Sustainable Development Goals 16 report and the Economic Value of Peace 2016 report. This year, IEP celebrated 10 years of of measuring and analysing global levels of peace. In celebration of this milestone, the Institute for Economics and Peace along with the Diplomatic Courier Magazine hosted the The Future of Peace Summit in Washington D.C.

As we continue to expand our philosophy remains geared towards creating a paradigm shift in the way the world thinks about peace. I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward sharing the next 10 years of peace research and innovation with you.

REPORT RELEASES 2016

2016 - A Year in Reports

The GPI 2016 report found that the world has continued to decline in peace. It highlighted a growing global inequality in peace; while some regions have enjoyed sustained and stable levels of peace and security, many others have spiralled into a seemingly endless cycle of conflict and violence.

The fourth edition of the GTI was released in November, its results were complementary to the earlier GPI. Whilst a 10% decrease in the number of deaths from terrorism in 2015 resulted in 3,389 fewer deaths than 2014, a global total of 29,376 deaths made 2015 the second deadliest year on record. The continued intensification of terrorism in a number of countries is a cause for serious concern. In addition to these two widely covered reports IEP also released the Mexico Peace Index, the Positive Peace Index, the Sustainable Development Goals report, and the Economic Value of Peace report.

POSITIVE PEACE 2016

Positive Peace Training: Uganda

On the 30th Sept - 2nd October 2016, the Institute for Economics and Peace, in collaboration with Rotary and the International Peace & Security Institute (IPSI) led a Positive Peace workshop in Kampala, Uganda. The goal of the workshop was to present IEP’s peace research, and to educate 120 young Rotarians from all around Uganda on the concepts of Positive Peace.

Through a series of interactive workshops, participants explored the systemic nature of peace and how to apply IEP’s research to local issues. At the conclusion participants developed proposals for their own communities to put into practice the concepts they learnt throughout the workshop. A follow up is to be scheduled in 2017 to reconvene and discuss progress on these projects.
PROJECT ROUND UP 2016

ESRI, Training 1M, GPI Ambassadors

Training 1M - IEP have the goal of educating one million people globally on positive peace. By becoming more knowledgeable about peace, we believe that young people will be better prepared to help shape a better future for the planet. This training program is in its final stages of development, and we expect to start rolling it out early in the new year.

GPI Ambassadors - This year IEP, in collaboration with Rotary International, launched a GPI Ambassadors program. The goal of the program was to share knowledge about the drivers of peacefulness and generate dialogue and debate about the state of peace across the globe. Each of our GPI Ambassadors has engaged with their local community, Rotary Club and networks providing them with the latest results and findings from the GPI analysis. Ambassadors have also engaged in a variety of initiatives, such as making presentations, writing blogs and hosting workshops. A number of the 123 GPI Ambassadors are currently being trained in the GTI findings.

ESRI Collaboration - Earlier this year, IEP and ESRI agreed to collaborate, combining ESRI’s geo-spatial and mapping technologies with IEP's peace research and data to create engaging visualisations such as the Global Terrorism StoryMap. IEP's Alistair Gee and Thom Morgan shared the stage at ESRI's 'An Afternoon with Jack' event at the Sydney Opera House.
