Parvadhiraj Paryushan Maha Parv Program Outline

Jain festivals are characterized by both internal and external celebrations. The internal celebration is through praying and expressing devotion to Jinas, practicing meditation, spiritual studies, and renunciation. Paryushan and Das Lakshana are important Jain festivals. It happens during late August / September commencing on the twelfth day of the fortnight of the waning moon cycle and ending in the fourteenth of the fortnight of the waxing moon cycle. During this 18 days period, Jain scholars and monks visit temples and explain the Jain philosophy. Jains during this period practice external austerities such as fasting, limiting their normal activities, long distance travel etc. At the conclusion of the festivities, a look back is encouraged, and Pratikraman is done for repentance of faults and forgiveness is given and asked for from all living beings.
We will be honored to have with us Jain scholar Shri Dhirajlal Pandit, during Paryushan.

      Some Important Pointers:

      • Every year it is observed that many folks leave main hall before morning lecture is over, around 11:45 AM to get the seat for Ekasana, before Mangalik is completed (around noon). This does not look good for the speaker as well as for JCSC Sangha. EC assures that there will be seats for all the folks, and requests each of you to not leave the main hall until lecture is over. Ekasana Committee will not allow to reserve the seat before noon.
      • We have received great support and co-operation from all the members of the community in our mission of No Ratri-Bhojan. Keeping this in view, EC has made necessary changes as noted  to the Paryushan Mahaparv program timings. We expect the same level of support and co-operation from you all again during the Paryushan Mahaparv. Swamivatsalya dinner will be served only up to 30 minutes prior to sunset (Sunset time during Paryushan is 7:00 pm)
      • Please make a note that this year Mahavir Jayanti will be celebrated on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Jain Center Of Southern California.

Subject: Samkit (Samyak Darshan, Samyaktva, Enlightened Perception)
Day: Monday to Thursday,  August 29th to Sept 1st, 2016
      Time: 9 PM onwards
      Speaker: Harshad Maniar

Samkit is the starting point on the journey of liberation.
The seed of becoming the supreme self lies in Samkit.
The soul where Samkit appears is certain to attain liberation one day.

Without its presence, scriptural knowledge remains merely the information in one’s memory bank;neither does this knowledge nor conduct transform into the meaningful instruments of liberation and thus soul remains in transmigration.

Power point presentation will include following topics:

      1. The true nature and qualities of the soul.
      2. The supreme goal of the life.
      3. Meaning and definition of Samkit.
      4. Nature of Mithyatva.
      5. From darkness of Mithyatva to light of the Samkit.
      6. Origin of Samkit.
      7. Journey of the Soul.
      8. Attainment of Samkit, easy or difficult?
      9. Who can attain Samkit?
      10. The characteristics to attain Samkit.
      11. Conduct of one who has attained Samkit.
      12. 8 limbs and 67 proclamation of Samkit.
      13. Importance, impact and fruits of Samkit.
      14. Samkit is art of living.
      15. Superiority of Samkit.
      16. Liberation through Samkit.

      2016 Paryushan Ekasana,Swamivatsalya,Parna - RSVP

R.S.V.P. stands for a French phrase, "répondez, s'il vous plaît," which means "please reply." The person sending the invitation would like you to tell him or her whether you accept or decline the invitation. That is, will you be coming to the event or not? Etiquette rules followed in most Western cultures require that if you receive a formal, written invitation, you should reply promptly, perhaps that same day. For the team that is planning for Ekasana, Swamivatsalya and Parna this is important from a practical point of view, because they need to know how many people to count on and how much food to prepare. With unreliable RSVP count, either we are short of food or too much food and neither situation is desirable. JCSC Food/Ekasana committee urges all the community members to please RSVP in time, using the link below, so they can properly plan as tremendous time and effort goes in planning process. Your understanding and cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

Request For University Food Delivery Assistance
The JCSC is proud to announce the setting up of a food delivery service to the different colleges in the Los Angeles and surrounding areas during the coming Paryushan. To best serve the students with Jain Paryushan food during these eight days, we would like your help and assistance wherever possible.
If you are, or know of an active student in any of the colleges in these areas, please connect with us.

      We need the following:
      1) A total count of all Jain students who wish to receive food during Paryushan in various colleges, the more the students in a college the better for the program.
      2) Drivers who are willing and able to pick up and deliver the food from the Jain Center to some of the colleges.
      3) The food will be prepared at the temple, packed and sent out every day and we could use help for this process too.
      4) Leads in every college who will take the responsibility of receiving the food in a central area (possibly in the respective college) and re-distributing to all the other students of that college who have signed up for the program.

Please contact either Mahendrabhai Shah at 1-714-369-8701 or Kalpesh Jhaveriat 1-909-598-7070 for further details.
