Fasting is of value today, has always been in the past and will be in the future too.
According to Ayurveda, every person should fast once or twice a month.
This gives the digestive system some rest.
Nature cure therapists also advise fasting to expunge foreign matter.
Religious people advise fasting to cleanse the soul.
One action, many interpretations.

Doctors laid emphasis on purifying the body while religious people laid emphasis on the resolve to restrain.
For cleansing of the soul can not be done by just cleansing the body.
It requires a clear resolve.
