Jain Chair At UCI: An Opportunity to Sponsor Temple of Eductaion (Gyan Mandir) in Southern California

The generous donation of $ 1 Million from families of Drs. Jasvant and Meera Modi and Mr. Rajesh (Raju) and Mrs. Neeta Shah of Los Angeles have offered us a once in a lifetime unique opportunity to join hands and be part of building a Temple of Education at University of California, Irvine.

We have built many and continue to build more Temples of Worship (Jain Temples) in North America. The time has come to build Temples of Education (Gyan Mandir) as well.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” - Nelson Mandela. “Nahi Gyanen Saadrisham Pavitram jha vidhyate (Nothing is more sacred than the education)”
This is the time when Jain Principles of Ahimsa, Anekantvad and Aparigrah are most needed by the citizens of the world.

We are fortunate to have been able to establish Professorships and Centers for Jain Studies at several Universities in North America. To further Jain education to mainstream Americans Dr. Modi and Mr. Shah’s families have signed “Shri Parshvanath Presidential Chair in Jain Studies” in the School of Humanities of a prestigious University of California, Irvine on 12th August, 2015. We believe this is the First Chair in Jain studies in North America.

The endowed Chair is funded with $ 2 million of which the donors contribute $ 1.5 Million and UC President as a matching donation provides $ 500,000. For Shri Parshvanath Presidential Chair in Jain Studies $ 1 M funds are pledged as follows: Drs. Jasvant and Meera Modi $ 750,000 and Mr. Rajesh (Raju) and Mrs. Neeta Shah $ 250,000. For the balance of $ 500,000 community members have been offered a unique opportunity to help raise the funds and be an active participant in this lifetime opportunity. In the meanwhile, the Modi and Shah families have graciously provided a warranty to UCI for the entire $ 1.5 M as required for the endowed chair commitment.  The annual interest in the endowment provides resources in perpetuity for faculty salary, teaching, research and related activities.

Jain Center of Southern California (JCSC), Jain Center of Los Angeles (JCLA) and JAINA have very kindly agreed to help raise the balance of $ 500,000 donations for this cause. This offers all of us a lifetime chance to participate and engrave our contribution towards the chair. Please keep in mind the following points while you consider donations:

1.    Your donation will stay in perpetuity (Forever as only interest will be used by UCI)
2.    You will have two years to fulfill your pledge (by Paryusan 2017)
3.    UCI will place the name of donors who give $ 5000 and more on the plaque in School of Humanities that will remain forever.
4.    You will donate to JCSC, JCLA or JAINA and get the Tax deduction.
5.    JCSC and JCLA will forward your donation (write checks) to UCI Foundation.

No amount is small, every dollar counts, Ladies and Gentlemen we are looking forward to everyone’s participation.

Please contact Dr. Nitin Shah (562 244 9035), Yogesh Shah (714 936 5300), Dr. Jasvant Modi (213 999 7011), Raju Shah (213 820 5400), Virendra Shah (310 218 7979), Dilip Shah (215 868 0381), Ashok Domadia
(510 364 7939), Mahesh Wadher (909 376 4027) or Sulekh Jain (832 594 8005) if you have any questions for your pledge.

Wellness Challenge: Do Not Eat After Sunset

For the upcoming weekly challenge we are challenging the participants to "avoid eating food after sunset.” Consuming food, water etc. at night is strictly prohibited in the Jain Dharma. There are many reasons for this prohibition. The germs and microbes that disappear when there is sunlight do not really get destroyed; they take shelter in shadowy places and after the sunset, they enter and pervade the atmosphere. These microbes are invisible to the naked eye, get into our food. Consuming this kind of food will lead to killing of these germs and bacteria’s which in turn will lead to our ill health. For more information and to participate in the challenge, click here.

Logassa Challenge

Contemplation of the soul - a key to Paryushan Parv and Das Lakshan. It is a time to reflect and involve ourselves in religious practices in every day affairs. It is a time to think, analyze and meditate as part of right conduct.

There are six essential rites (Avashyak) interwoven with daily life of a pious Jain. The second essential is Chaturvimshati-Stav - praying and appreciating the qualities of the 24 Tirthankars. Devpuja, worship of the Tirthankars, covers Chaturvimsati-stava.

Logassa Sutra is the Chaturvimshati-Stav. When we recite the Logassa Sutra we are praising and admiring the qualities of Tirthankars, who have conquered their passions. We get motivated to overcome similar passions of anger, ego, deceit and greed. We appreciate the Tirthankars for showing us the path of liberation.

Take the Logassa Challenge and be able to recite the Logassa Sutra. If you are having a tough time with memorization or pronunciation, try the Karaoke learning tool. There are many audio and visual tools on the JCSC website.

Challenge yourself and others! Register today!

Other News and Events

1) Anekant Community Center (ACC) Musical Masala Hungama

Phenomenal growth of Jain Center of Southern California made us realize in 2003 that we need another organization, a non-religious arm to do humanitarian activities and apply for grants for those activities and to attract matching funds from corporations. Recognizing the incredibly rich and complex nature of reality, Jains developed the concept of notion of the “Many-sidedness” or “Multiplicity of Views” (anekant) of existence. Thus Anekant Community Center (ACC) was created in 2005. ACC wishes to expand services beyond  race, religion, or country - A true Anukampa in practice.

All members of Jain Center of Southern California are also members of ACC.

We will celebrate 10th Anniversary on Saturday, 10th October, 2015 at  the Jain Center.
