Varshi Tap Parna - April 21, 2015

We will have Varshitap Parna on Vaishkh Sud 3, Akhatrij on Tuesday, April 21. All the Tapsvis who are doing Varshitap or Varshik Tap, please accept this as an invitation from JCSC to come for Parna. The entire Community is invited to take part in the celebration. We will celebrate Parnas during the following time:

  • 8:00am - 10:00am: Navkar Mantra Jaap and Snatra Puja
  • 10:00am onwards: Varshitap Parna with Ikshu Ras (Sugar-Cane Juice) followed by Bhathu

Please send your name, phone number, and e-mail address to Hemendra Doshi if you are doing Varshi Tap.

This is the auspicious day when Shree Rushabhdev Bhagvan did parna with Ikshu Ras after his year-round fasting.

What is Varshitap and its significance:

In Varshitap, a person does fasting for one day, and observes Biasana for one day. Sometimes, between such days, fasting has to be done for two days continuously. This austerity (Tap) must be observed from the 8th day of the Krishna Paksh (the black fortnight) of Chaitra month to the Akshay Tritiya (the 3rd day) of the bright fortnight of the Vaishak of the next year.

This austerity is broken (Parna) by taking sugar-cane juice (Ikshu Ras). It is also considered auspicious for people who help feed the sugar-cane juice to the person who has done the fasting (Tapasvi).

According to scriptures, our first Tirthankar - Rishabhdev Bhagwaan (also known as Aditnaath Bhagwaan) performed the Parna on this day Akshaya Tritiya) after fasting for 13 months and 13 days continuously. Also mentioned are his great grand sons, Hastinapura’s King, Som Prabha and his younger brother, Shreyans Kumar. When Rishabhdev Bhagwaan broke his year-long fast, a rain of jewels and flowers started falling and scintillating climate surrounded the atmosphere.

For Ikshu Ras (Sugar-cane Juice): $501. The following sponsorships are available:

  • For Bhathu to community members: $751

Shibir On Conquering Four Kashays - April 26, 2015

Overcoming Our Inner Hurdles

A Practical Approach to Religion.

Our goal as a Jain is to liberate our soul from the infinite karmas - the root cause of our miseries. BUT one can only do that if we understand what causes those Karmas.

This half-day workshop is recommended to all members who are interested in knowing about "Religion" in a very practical way. The workshop will be in half Gujarati & half English.

We always have a habit of listening...but this time we will think, analyze, and make an attempt to change our day to day life by looking at 4 main root causes of suffering - 4 Kashays [Passions: Anger, Ego, Deceit, Greed].

Date: Sunday, April 16, 2015 from 10am to 12.30pm at JCSC followed by lunch.

For accurate head count for lunch, please register using this form/link before April 20, 2015.

Wellness Challenge - Walk A Total Of 10 Miles Everyday

For the upcoming weekly challenge we are challenging the participants to "Walk a total of 10 miles.” Try to make walking a routine - for example, try to walk at the same time each day. Remember, you use the same amount of energy, no matter what time of day you walk, so do what is most convenient for you. You may find that asking someone to walk with you will help make it a regular activity. Some people find that keeping an activity diary or log also makes it easier. For more information and to participate in the challenge, click here.
