MAHARASHTRA GOVERNMENT BANS COW SLAUGHTER: FIVE YEARS JAIL

The bill banning cow slaughter in Maharashtra, pending for several years, finally received the President's assent, which means red meat lovers in the state will have to do without beef. This measure has taken almost twenty years to materialize and was initiated during the previous Sena-BJP Government.
The bill was first submitted to the President for approval on January 30, 1996.. However, subsequent Governments at the Centre, including the BJP led NDA stalled it and did not seek the President’s consent.
A delegation of seven state BJP MPs led by Kirit Somaiya, (MP from Mumbai North) had met the President in New Delhi recently and submitted a memorandum seeking assent to the bill. The memorandum said that the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill, 1995, passed during the previous Shiv Sena-BJP regime, was pending for approval for 19 years. The law will ban beef from the slaughter of bulls and bullocks, which was previously allowed based on a fit-for-slaughter certificate. The new Act will, however, allow the slaughter of water buffaloes. The punishment for the sale of beef or possession of it could be prison for five years with an additional fine of Rs 10,000. It is notable that, Reuters new service had earlier reported that Hindu nationalists in India had stepped up attacks on the country's beef industry, seizing trucks with cattle bound for abattoirs and blockading meat processing plants in a bid to halt the trade in the world's second-biggest exporter of beef. An official at a beef transport group in Maharashtra state said around 10 vehicles travelling to Mumbai had been stopped in the last week of February, the animals taken away.
HARYANA GOVERNMENT TO GO FOR NEW LAW TO BAN COW SLAUGHTER
Mar. 14th, 2015. After Maharastra, the Haryana government is introducing a bill to ban beef and cow slaughter. The bill will provide punishment under section 302, which amounts to murder, for those who caught in slaughtering cows and possessing beef. The bill is likely to be introduced on 8th March. The proposed act is called "Cow Protection and Cow Conservation and Development Bill'. For the scientific test and analysis, government is considering to establish laboratories to differentiate beef from meat of that of other animal species. Test reports of these laboratories will be valid evidence in the court of law. The state will also provide financial and technical support to cow welfare organisations that help in taking care of sick, injured, stray and uneconomic cows. According to BJP spokes person, the law would be amended to raise the punishment for cow slaughter from the present five years imprisonment to penalties equal to the crime of murder. At present the maximum punishment for cow slaughter in Haryana is five years jail with fine up to Rs 5000. But if the punishment becomes similar to murder, the minimum punishment will be life term. |

Can a vegan diet save the world? According to a new report from the UN, the answer is yes. The Guardian writes that a global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty, and the worst impacts of climate change. The report notes that the western preference for meat- and dairy-heavy diets is unsustainable, especially as the population is expected to grow to 9.1 billion by 2050.
The report adds that animal products cause more damage than construction minerals such as sand or cement, plastics or metals. Plus, livestock raised for meat consumes a large portion of the world's crops and a lot of freshwater. Currently, agriculture, particularly meat and dairy products, account for 70 percent of the world's freshwater consumption. It also accounts for 39 percent of the globe's total land use and 19 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions.
Importantly, as the population grows, the impact from agriculture will substantially grow as well, thanks to the the increasing consumption of animal products. The report notes that unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives. The only option is to cut down on the number of animal products consumed. The UN isn't the only one advocating a more plant-focused diet. A couple from the United Kingdom are working hard to make Veganuary a global movement. The duo are trying to convince people to eat less animal products by going vegan for the month of January. According to a press release, 50 percent of last year's participants said that they intended to remain vegan for good. Perhaps the UN just found a new partner in their global mission?

In India, well on track to become world's largest bovine meat exporter, Muslims are earning just a peanut as against the general perception about the trade, and it is actually the government and non-Muslims who are benefiting the most from about 4.5 billion US dollar animal slaughter business, it was found in a study conducted by ummid.com. The study also found that except for Allana Sons, a 1969 company which has a major share in frozen meat export from India, and few other smaller players who are Muslims, majority of meat exporters and owners of modern abattoirs, and those associated with other related industries like bone, leather, horn, farmers, transporters, animal blood and other raw materials are mainly non-Muslims.

Ummid.com, after talking to beef traders in various parts of the state, organisations working for them and going through the available records and data, found that animals are purchased in over 95% cases from farmers, majority of them being non-Muslims. Most of the transporters who ferry animals and meat from one place to another before and after slaughter are also not Muslims. Except for direct consumption, where also Muslims and non-Muslims both are at par in terms of taking benefits, in rest all associated business including meat export, bone crushing and powder industry, leather industry, horn processing industry, blood processing, animal fat and soap industry, except for few exceptions, each one is dominated entirely by non-Muslims. Some prominent names are Arabian Export of Deepak Tijori, Al Kabeer Exports now run by Atul Subberwal, Al-Noor Export of Ajay Sud, Mahesh Jagadale and Co, Sujata Bones of MK Deore, Dode Industries, Fine Exports, SK Leather, Ramesh Juneja & Sons, Bharat Leather, Woodland, Raymonds, Datta Soap, BS International, Sixth Sense, Natural Craft, Bounty Fashion Export, Kochhar Brothers, Ravi Exports, Kalia International, and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. - all engaged in beef and the business of associated raw materials and products.
It is also found that some of those associated with the trade have different names and identities for different countries and regions. Like, Al Kabeer is 'Samurai' in Japan, 'Falcon Foods' in the UK, and 'Tayebat Al Emarat' in the UAE. It also owns other brands like Tabarruk, Cascade and Coral Reef. It is also found that when comes to taking benefits from the trade the government too is not far behind. The findings showed that the state as an average charge Rs.120 for every animal purchased and Rs.150 per animal as slaughtering fees. The All-India Meat and Livestock Exporters Association lists 42 abattoir-cum-meat processing plants in the country and 32 meat processing plants are registered with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). These are over and above the municipal slaughterhouses which according to a rough estimates stand at 3,600. India became the world's biggest buffalo meat exporter in 2012, ahead of Brazil. A report by the US Department of Agriculture says buffaloes are inexpensive to keep. This makes their meat a dollar a kg cheaper than beef. The Indian government has invested heavily in abattoirs. Recently released Ministry of Food Processing data showed that India exported 1.89 million tonnes of beef in 2012-2013, which is a 50 per cent increase over five years ago.
The total value of India's buffalo meat exports for the year 2010-11 was USD 1.9 billion which touched USD 2.3 billion during 2012-13. Exports have nearly tripled since 2009, rising to 1.65 millon tonnes in 2012, according to USDA figures. According to data released by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce, Indian buffalo meat exports touched an all time high of Rs.13,917 crore in value terms in April-October 2013, representing an increase of nearly 58% over same period last year. In terms of quantity too, there has been 23% rise in buffalo meat exports from India. Among Indian states, Uttar Pradesh (UP) has emerged as the biggest exporter of buffalo meat, followed by Punjab and Maharashtra. Besides having the country's largest buffalo population, UP also has the highest number of abattoirs- cum-meat processing export units. The state has 317 registered slaughterhouses and, in addition, 24 export-oriented units for buffalo meat. Of the total Indian carabeef exports, 67% originates from this state.
Mumbai in Maharashtra has a distinction of having Deonar abattoir – Asia's largest. It has a capacity of about 4000 animals and recruit over 1200 people besides 30 medical professionals. Among the important buyers of Indian bovine and other meat are Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. India exports both frozen and fresh chilled meat. China is a big market for Indian meat. Currently, one third of the total buffalo meat is exported to Vietnam. Records show that buffalo meat export to Vietnam has seen a surprising growth in the recent period. Between April-October 2013, buffalo meat exports to Vietnam rose by 229% in value terms, and more than 100% in quantity terms over the same period last year. Vietnam accounts for close to 40% buffalo meat exports from India. It is also found that, barring some 2% that can be called illegal, most of the slaughtering at these places were done at government approved, state owned or private, abattoirs, and in the presence of the government appointed qualified medical professionals. Interestingly, it was found that a doctor was appointed by the government but the payment is borne by the owners of the respective slaughter houses.
To encourage and support the industry which earns the state handsome revenue, the centre provides a transport subsidy of Rs. 70 a kg for buffalo meat exports. It also gives grants of 50 per cent for general areas and 75 per cent for hill areas up to Rs.15 crore for setting up and modernising abattoirs. Between 2006-07 and 2011-12, the Centre's total subsidy for setting up abattoirs was Rs.240 crore, another Rs.300 crore went into buffalo rearing. In India, cow is considered as sacred and its slaughter is banned since 1976. However bulls, bullocks and calves slaughter was allowed in most of the Indian states including Maharashtra. But, Maharashtra passed an amended legislation banning cow slaughter this month banning also bulls, bullocks and calves slaughter. Buffalo meat is treated in India as beef, and its export is flourishing under the government patronage.

UNITED KINGDOM MINISTERS REJECT CALL TO BAN RELIGIOUS SLAUGHTER

A petition demanding an outright ban on slaughtering animals without stunning them first has attracted more than 100,000 backers - but the Government insisted it still had 'no intention' of outlawing religious slaughter. Vets chief John Blackwell vowed to continue the fight, warning ministers they 'simply cannot ignore the strength of public feeling' over animal welfare and a failure to let consumers know how their meat was killed. Campaigners will now press for a fresh Commons debate on the issue after quickly exceeding the six-figure threshold required on the parliamentary petition site to trigger a possible time slot. The controversy surrounds legal exemptions for religious purposes such as Muslim halal and Jewish shechita - which Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to uphold in a speech last year to the Israeli parliament. Opponents say they respect the various faith traditions but insist animal welfare must take priority - with scientific evidence clear that those that are killed without stunning feel pain.

The petition - which backs calls by the RSPCA, the British Veterinary Association (BVA), the Farm Animal Welfare Committee, the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe and the Humane Slaughter Association - points out that more than 80% of halal meat in the UK is pre-stunned. 'We must differentiate between religious and non-stun slaughter. Our concern does not relate to religious belief but to the animal welfare compromise,' it states.' Non-stun slaughter affects millions of animals. We support a good life and a humane death for all animals.' There are also concerns about large quantities of meat being sold without any indication of how the animal was slaughtered and the petition says that until a ban is imposed, consumers must be told what they are buying.
BVA president Mr. Blackwell said: 'This is a truly fantastic result for animal welfare. 'BVA has long argued that all animals should be stunned before slaughter to render them insensible to pain and we are delighted that the British public has got so firmly behind our campaign. 'Consumers value the high welfare of British produce and care deeply about the provenance of their food. 'But under the current legislation meat from non-stun slaughter can end up in the food chain unlabelled as such, which is completely unacceptable. 'Scientific evidence tells us that non-stun slaughter allows the animal to perceive pain and compromises animal welfare. This is an issue that affects the welfare of millions of individual animals every year. 'The Government simply cannot ignore the strength of public feeling and we look forward to petitioning the Backbench Business Committee for a full debate in the new parliament.' The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) remained unswayed by the petition hitting the 100,000 milestone - achieved by only 35 demands on the e-petition site since 2011, around 0.1% of those accepted.
THOUSANDS OF ANIMALS RESCUED FROM ILLEGAL SLAUGHTER HOUSE: MIAMI (UNITED STATES)

The investigation into the roughly 200 acre Coco Farms was conducted by Miami-Dade Police, the volunteer-led Animal Recovery Mission and the State Attorney's Office, and found at least 3,000 animals kept in unsanitary conditions. "These animals were starved to death," said Richard Couto of Animal Recovery Mission. "They're drinking polluted water. The animals that were fed were being fed intestines of newly slaughtered animals." Police and volunteers worked well into the night Thursday and into Friday and recovered some 3,000 plus pigs, cows, goats and even dogs from the property, located at 41st Street and Northwest 118th Avenue in northwest Miami-Dade. "Regular families were coming in here and picking out an animal and having it butchered in some of the more unsanitary conditions in the country," Couto added.

Police have arrested and charged 69-year-old Gregorio Santa Ana and 35-year-old Jose Armando Solis, both of Miami, on a long list of counts of animal cruelty. Friday afternoon, Solis appeared in bond court on those charges, and was ordered held on a $19,000 bond. It is not yet known if Solis had hired an attorney. Santa Ana appeared later in the day Friday and was ordered held on $169,000 bond, with additional instructions to stay away from the slaughterhouse property. Santa Ana resides on that property, but prosecutors said that as of now, the property remains an active crime scene.
Santa Ana claimed in court that he has been dealing with animals for at least 40 years. He was appointed a public defender in bond court, but said he intended to hire his private attorney for all future hearings. Additionally, attorney Warren Eth has been assigned as the special prosecutor in the case. Officials initially reported that 3,000 animals were recovered from the property. Investigators later estimated that there may have been at least twice that number of animals on the property. Many of the animals were in such poor health they had to be euthanized by veterinarians on the scene. Couto estimates that hundreds of animals had to be put down, and many are still dying. Police and crews also found a number of already deceased animals scattered throughout the property, as well as diseased animals living in deplorable conditions. The animals that authorities were are able to save are being handed over to volunteers with the Animal Recovery Mission to receive proper medical care and nutrition. MUMBAI SHANTINATH JAIN TEMPLE COMPLETES 200 YEARS
Feb. 9th, 2015. Mumbai. The intricately carved Shree Shantinath Jain Mandir, better known as Pydhonie Derasar, is celebrating its milestone 200th anniversary this year. The Jain Community is organised a series of cultural activities to highlight issues of social importance in a week-long programme. This derasar located opposite Minara Masjid was built by one Motisha Sheth in 1815. Another shrine of the same name in Bora Bazaar, Fort, observed its 200th anniversary in 2008. Pydhonie Derasar's celebration was presided over by the Acharya Rajyeshwarisoori Maharaj Saheb, Ganivar Vitragyash and Upadhyay Vishrutyash Vijay. Managing trustee Pundrik Shah said, "On January 23, Chief Justice Mohit Shah of the Bombay High Court inaugurated the celebrations". Jain lawyer Dhanpal Solanki said, "The aim is to create awareness on issues that the Jain community believes in for instance, vegetarianism, women's education, the battle against female foeticide, gutkha, smoking and drug addiction. Gynaecologist Mahendra Patel made a presentation against foeticide while a young girl named Bhasha Vaghani made a touching speech on the subject." The derasar authorities gave away artificial limbs to 200 handicapped people and donated tricycles, hearing aids and study material. The Jain Doctors Federation organised medical camps and blood donation drives at Saifee School nearby under the guidance of Prashant Zaveri. |
JAIN TEMPLE OF GANGA PERIOD EXCAVATED

Jan. 4th, 2015. Mandya Dist. A Jain Basadi, built during Ganga dynasty in the sixth century, has been excavated near Arethippuru village, Maddur taluk, Mandya district.
In the month of September and October, a team of more than 30 Archeologists of Archeological Survey of India had taken up the excavation works. A Jain temple, measuring about hundred feet in length and 40 feet in width was discovered, along with seven statues atop Chandragiri Hill. The Jain temple consists of a facade, an entrance and sanctum sanctorum. Ten stone pillars, statues of Bahubali, Yaksha and Yakshini, have been excavated. Apart from them, several other relics that were used to perform rituals at the temple were also discovered during the excavation. Experts opine that the Basadi was dedicated to one of the Tirtankaras of Jainism and was once a popular place for pilgrims, along with the temples at Shravanabelagola. According to ASI officials, there were chances that four more Jain temples are present around the excavation site.
THEFT IN JAIN TEMPLE IN AGRA
Feb. 25th, 2015. Agra. Ornaments worn by deities worth more than Rs 5 lakh were allegedly stolen from a 600-year-old Jain temple in Awagarh, 25-kms from Etah district, making this the fifth theft in a place of worship in the Braj region this month.

Angry devotees gheraoed the Awagarh police station and blocked roads, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. Police force from several nearby stations was deployed in the area to avoid any untoward situation. UP DGP AK Jain has ordered cops to solve tem ple theft cases on a priority basis. Police said 40 g of gold and 6.5 kg silver were stolen from the temple. According to Police, the thieves had entered the temple by cutting the grills installed on the rooftop. The ornaments of the idols in the temples have been stolen along with utensils and some cash. An FIR has been lodged against unidentified men. Earlier on February 14, an 'ashtadhatu' idol of Lord Buddha was stolen from a temple in Tedhi Baghiya under Etmadaula. Angry devotees had protested against the theft outside police station and jammed Agra-Hathras highway for more than an hour. Police lodged an FIR but no further development has taken place in the case so far. On February 8, around 200-year-old idols of lord Radha-Krisha, made-up of 'ashtadhatu' went missing from a temple in Kheragarh. Later, the statues were recovered from a garbage heap near an under construction building by the locals.
Three ancient shivlings were stolen from temples in Barsana block of Mathura district on February 4. The thefts had rocked the region as a seer sat on demonstration and police had alleged the involvement of anti-social elements in the act. Later, after a day, the shivlings were found dumped in a nearby field. On February 2, there was a similar theft at a temple in Bodla (Agra). The idol was broken by the thieves who failed to take it away. "In all the previous cases, the idols were recovered from garbage or from outskirts. We suspect that some people intent on creating mischief are behind the incident," said a police official.
FOUR IDOLS STOLEN FROM JAIN TEMPLE
Feb. 18th, 2015. Tiruvannamalai. Four bronze idols, estimated to be worth Rs 3 lakh, were stolen from a Jain Temple in Salukkai village near Vandavasi. The incident came to light when the priest had gone to perform the regular pooja and saw the main gate and the door of the sanctum broken open in the morning. On information, Police of Vandavasi along with two inspectors conducted an inquiry. Police officials said that the bronze idols weigh around 20 kgs and include idols of Mahaveer Jain and Thirthankar. The miscreants scaled the compound wall of the temple and broke open the main gate of the sanctum and decamped with the idols. Special teams have been formed to investigate the case.

STHANAKWASI SADHU SADHVI CONCLAVE - 2015
After a gap of almost 28 years, Sadhus and Sadhvis from Jain Swetamber Sthanakwasi Sect are holding long awaited conclave at Indore. A week long meet, which is being attended by over 800 Sadhus and Sadhvis, will start on 20th, March under the auspicious blessings and guidance of Acharya Dr. Shivmuniji M. S.

The conclave will also be attended by over 5000 community members from all over the country. The Chairman of All India Sthanakwasi Jain Conference Shri Nemnath Jain is personally supervising the massive arrangements. The National Conclave Committee includes members from all over the country. Shri R. D. Jain, Delhi, Shri Ram Kumar Jain, Ludhiana, Shri Anand Prakash Jain, Delhi, Shri Manmohan Jain, Mujaffarnagar and Shri Sumermal Lunawat Jain, Chennai are the chief patrons of the organising committee. Although the detailed agenda of the conclave is not public, it is expected that wide range of subjects will be discussed. It is also possible that, Acharya Shri Dr. Shivmuni may announce his successor in this conclave. In Last such conclave at Pune, in 1987 Acharya Shri Anand Rishiji M.S. had declared Devendra Muniji as his successor. Community Members are also hopeful that this event will bring reformist standardization in ritualistic and daily practices.
Whatever is conversed or resolved in this conclave by our revered saints, it will have multi dimensional impact on whole of the community. The expectation is very high at all levels. Some of the issues, where clear guidelines are expected can be enumerated as follows.
1. Nomination of Chief amongst Female group and their empowerment with appropriate responsibilities. It is note worthy that today females are 65% of the total saint number.
2. Recognizing of middle category i.e. Saman and Samni on the lines of Terapanth and rules for that.
3. Management of Institutions by saints and donation collection.
4. Security issues while on highway movement.
5. Rituals for Diksha and basic minimum requirement in individuals.
6. Approval for Diksha from Acharya Shri.
7. Medical treatment and old age provisions.
8. Chaturmas approval from top and chaturmas expenditure.
9. Political associations, attachments and patronage.
10.Responsibilities of Disciplinary Committee.
11.Use of modern technology e.g. laptops and mobile phone.
12. Use of wheel chair.
13.Rules about personal baggage and baggage carrying vehicles.
14. Rules regarding last rites.
We hope all these issues will draw appropriate attention and resolved with common consent of one and all. The success of the conclave will definitely be a new dawn for the Sthanakwasi Community.

Here are the real issues, I think should dominate the agenda.
1. How about scrapping the multi-sect mentality, and uniting all under a single umbrella of Jainism. I think it's more about the saints' ego, than us lay-people that actually bringing about this change seems so delusive. The sheer foolishness of multiple 'Parushan-parv' dates within the same religion speaks loads about the forgotten "Anekant", and our indentity hungary demeanor.
2. How about abandoning the discrimination against Female monks, and observing them equally honored phisically and spiritually. Which includes no-nonsense feet-touching when the male saint is younger than the lady monk.
3. What about absurd flamboyant ornamentation ('aangi') of idols. What about those rich showy marriages -- assessing the quality of arrangements by number of food items? And the king of all, those temples - extremely beautiful, but totally senseless. All this is just a manifestation of our fetish of money, and the desire of prosperity. Where is Mahaveer?
4. Mahaveer never taught subjugating human intellect, curiosity, exuberance and explorative ness under the blindfold of scripture recitation. We need to become true adventurers of innerness, the pursuers of self-realization, instead of slaves of verbiage. We have literally reduced the great "Sramana Dharma" to gaudy display of "tapasya" with "palna celebrations" which we all gawk as if it is the path to enlightenment. It's time we thought about all this hypocricy, and together with the saints, set forth a true spiritual realm, where Mahaveer is realized not followed, "Jinatva" is experienced not preached, and "Dharma" is endowed within, not buried inside scriptures. - Sent from my iPhone.
ROAD ACCIDENTS OF JAIN SAINTS IN GUJARAT AN ISSUE OF WORRY FOR COMMUNITY

Jan. 7th, 2015. Ahemdabad. Frequent accidental deaths of Jain saints on National Highways is an issue of concern for the entire Jain Community. Recently, we have seen a few fatal accidents in Gujarat. The reasons for such mishaps has been subject of discussion in various forums including social media platform. Even Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, in a message to Ahimsa Foundation has expressed his apprehension and requested Gujarat Police to examine the issue. It is definitely a thought provoking issue as a section of our community feels that this occurrences are not normal. There may be something more to it. It is feared that some organised group may be behind.
A group of Jain Journalists from All India Jain Journalist Association has taken the initiative to study the circumstances in which these accidents have occurred. They visited accident locations on Nation Highways in Gujarat. The journalist study group was also accompanied by Gujarat Senior Police Officials. The group checked up the facts and circumstances with nearby Police Stations, shopkeepers, restaurants, petrol pump employees etc. The study group has concluded that, early morning movement of our saints is the reason behind these accidents. Our saints start moving very early in the morning, when it is still dark. At this time the truck drivers on Highways are also somewhat tired and sleepy. Besides, Road visibility is also very low in early morning. At high speed, the truck drivers can not instantaneously apply the brakes. This result into accidents and deaths. There does not appear to be any other reasons. Any other reason is ruled out.
As a matter of precaution, saint groups should be requested to restrained from early morning movement. They should start only when the day light is adequate. Besides, they should also be escorted by group of followers and regular caution should be given. This can not be the responsibility of the government. It is our community responsibility and we have to come forward and protect our saints. If we can spend lakhs and crores on Ceremonies, Chaturmas Programmes, Sadhu Samhelan etc. Temples, then why can't we have some budget for the protection of our revered saints.
JAIN SADHU'S 180-DAY FASTING TO BE CELEBRATED
Feb. 22nd, 2014. Mumbai. The flow of devotees seeking blessings of 47-year-old Hansratnaji Maharaj is consistently increasing. Jain sadhu Panyas Hansratna Vijayji Maharaj has not shown any sign of fatigue.

Already, he has completed 174 days into fasting of cha masi upvas tap (six months of fast and penance), The 47-year-old Hansratna, a thin figure, will soon achieve what few in the community have. He will be one of 12 people in Jain history to have fasted for 180 days. A fast that is observed by surviving only on boiled water that can be consumed between 9am and 6pm. It was Lord Mahavir who started this soul-testing fast and did it twice in his lifetime while preaching to his disciples.
The last person in the community to achieve this feat was Ahmedabad-based Kinjal Shah, three years ago. She was felicitated in Mumbai because she had achieved the feat after over three centuries by someone else in the community. Now, Vijayji's achievement is being seen in high esteem by members of the community because he has been continuously traveling in the city even as he fasts. Since he started the fast, the monk has moved to a different Jain temple each day, traveling up to Borivili in the city.
A procession will be taken out from Godiji Jain temple in Pydhonie to celebrate the nearing of the completion of 180 days of his fast which goes on till February 27. A fast-breaking ceremony (Parna) will be held on February 28 at Wilson College grounds at Marine Drive. The community will celebrate the last five days in a open park. This will have the sadhu blessing people by sprinkling Vaskshep (spiritual sandalwood powder) on their heads. On the last day, it is expected that at least 10,000 Jains will witness Parna at Wilson College grounds. The event will start around 6.30am and Jains of all sects will attend it.

Indore: 99 years old Acharya Seemandhar Sagarji of Digamber Sect accepted sallekhna Samadhi at Indore and left for heavenly abode. Paalki Yatra of the Saint started from M. M. House, Dakachya and passed through several areas. The rituals were perfomred by Acharya Shri Pushpdunt Sagarji, Muni Tanmay Sagarji, Vipranat Sagarji and Muni Shri Pulaksagarji.

CENTRE ASKS STATES TO ENSURE JAINS GET MINORITY CERTIFICATES WITHOUT TROUBLE
Feb. 21st, 2015. New Delhi. Union Minister for Minority Affairs Najma Heptulla has instructed states to issue minority certificate to the members of Jain Community, whenever requested. She has written to all Chief Ministers..... "I would request you to kindly direct the concerned authorities under your government to issue minority certificates to the Jains expeditiously, as and when they apply for the same, so that the Jains will also be in a position to avail the benefits arising there from, by virtue of their inclusion in the list of recognized minorities within the country." Minister has acknowledged having received a large number of representations from Jain Community in this regard. Community members have often experienced reluctance of revenue authorities and other designated officials while issuing them minority certificates. The said certificate is the only acceptable proof of a member's minority status. Jains were notified as a minority community in January 2014, the latest to join the list comprising Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists and Parsis. The low level of awareness about the decision is seen as the reason for the hurdle in obtaining certificates. .MINORITY MINISTER ORDERS SURVEY ON ALL MINORITIES EXCEPT MUSLIMS

Feb. 16th, 2015. New Delhi. The Minority Minister Mrs. Najma Heptulla has ordered a survey to assess the socio-economic conditions of Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Parsis and Buddhists. This is the first attempt to understand problems faced by the country's minorities. However, the Muslims have been kept out of the study. According to the Minister, there have been surveys like the one by the Sachar Panel that focused only on Muslims.
According to the Minister, the problems faced by the five communities were different from those of the Muslims. The survey will help us know the problems of the five communities and formulate policy accordingly to address their problems. Soon after assuming office, Minister had said the Parsis were the only minorities in India and cited their dwindling population to assert that her ministry would give utmost importance to stem the decline. Over the past few months, however, her ministry has received complaints from other minority groupings, too, especially the Jains, demanding that the government address the problems faced by the other five notified minorities. A representative body of Jains had moved the Supreme Court last December alleging discrimination by the Centre and states in allocating benefits for the community and preferential treatment of a fellow minority grouping for political reasons.
The petition alleged that the government had adopted an "appeasement policy towards Muslims" and all the benefits were being given to them. Last month, a bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu asked the Centre to examine within four months the Jain community's allegations. National Minorities Commission Chairperson Naseem Ahmad said "not only Muslims but all the other five communities were beneficiaries of welfare schemes".

It was Dr Jain's childhood dream to become a music director. His impaired vision did not stop him from composing, singing and giving a melodious foundation to Indian film and classical music.
Having started his career with Radhey Shyam Jhunjhunwala's 'Lori' in 1972, Dr. Jain went on to work for N N Sippy's film 'Sil Sila Hai Pyar Ka', Rajshri's 'Saudagar' and then superhit 'Chor Machaye Shor'. He wanted Kishore Kumar to sing 'Ghungroo ki tarah...'. The latter was at the time very busy, but after hearing the mukhada (opening verse) he readily agreed. "I developed a good relation with him like I had with Rafisaab. I did several songs with both these legends. Kishore was a fun loving person and a great singer, while Rafisaab was a bit sober and a committed singer who had recorded songs even when he had fever. Rafi's 'Tu hi who hasee hai' and 'Ek dal pe thotha bhaite...' were instant hits," he noted modestly. He made his debut as a singer in Basu Bhattacharya's 'Madhu Malti'.
He has composed music for over 150 films including 'Geeta Gata Chal', 'Ankhiyon Ke Jhaokhon Se', 'Chitchor', 'Pati Patni Aur Woh', ' Paramveer Chakra', 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili', 'Vivah'. 'Ramayan', 'Jai Hanuman', 'Jai Shri Krishna', 'Alif Laila', 'Jai Maa Vaishno Devi', 'Nupur' and 'Shani Ki Mahima' were among the many TV series he did. He has also worked on several dance ballets. All leading singers including, Rafi, Lata, Asha, Kishore, Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey and the present generation singers have worked with him. He discovered Yesudas, Jaspal Singh, Hemlata, Suresh Wadkar, Aarti Mukherjee and others for Hindi film music. Winner of several awards from the president and various state governments, his rich contribution to Indian music, art and culture fetched him a doctorate degree from the Teerthanker Mahaveer University. He has translated 'Quran Sharif' from Arabic to easy lyrical Urdu and composed former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's work 'Qadam Milakar Chalna Hoga'. He also authored "Ujalon Ka Silsila' and 'Sunhare Pal', which are based on his memories. Dr. Jain plans to start a music and fine arts university to preserve Indian literature and the classical work and will be urging the chief minister of Maharashtra to help him out. His music academy in Bhopal is under completion. However in a few months, he will be launching his online music course in voice training, voice modulation and the knowledge of 'sur-taal'.

Mar. 11th, 2015. A Billionaire who wants to extract precious resources from the moon is aiming to send the first commercial robotic spacecraft to the moon next year with the blessing of NASA. Naveen Jain, who left India for the US in 1983, is co-founder and Chairman of Moon Express, a California-based company, says the core plan is to explore the moon for resources of benefit to humanity.
It is known that the moon has vast riches: gold, cobalt, iron, palladium, platinum, tungsten and Helium-3, a gas that can be used in future fusion reactors to provide nuclear power without radioactive waste. If the first commercial robotic spacecraft landing is successful, Its second and third missions would likely involve bringing precious metals, minerals and even moon rocks back to earth. But who owns the moon? The United Nations’ 1979 Moon Agreement, which only came into force in 1984, states that “the Moon and its natural resources are the common heritage of mankind.” The UN’s Outer Space Treaty, which came into force in 1967, states that the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind. Yet NASA is working with Moon Express, Astrobotic Technologies of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Masten Space Systems of Mojave, California, to develop commercial robotic spacecrafts. According to Naveen Jain founder of Infospace and Intelius, NASA has an amazing amount of expertise when it comes to getting to the moon, and it wants to pass that knowledge on to a company like ours that has the best chance of being successful. Moon Express recently signed an agreement to take over the decommissioned Space Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral. The launch pad will be used for Moon Express’s lander development and flight-test operations.

IRS OFFICER S K JAIN APPOINTED OSD TO ARVIND KEJRIWAL
Mar. 13th, 2015. New Delhi. IRS officer Sukesh Kumar Jain has been appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Sukesh Kumar Jain, a 1992 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, is at present serving as a Director in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Finance Ministry. He will be "relieved of his duties" with effect from March 16 to take up the new assignment, a Finance Ministry order said. S. K. Jain has been appointed as OSD to Kejriwal, who is also an ex-IRS officer. This appointment is for a period of three years on deputation basis.

VISHWA HINDU PARISHAD CHIEF TAKES DIKSHA IN GUJARAT

Bharatbhai’s wife also took Diksha and left worldly life. Dr. Bharatbhai has been given new name ‘Hempadmaratna Vijayji Maharaj’ by his Guru. Acharya Hem Prabhusurishwarji Maharaj Saheb’s Guru Balmuni Maharaj Saheb and other Jain monks were present on this occasion.

This is a book about Jainism, a fascinating and ancient religion of India which, despite its vast age, and despite its having some features that many in the West would regard as exotic, is in many ways highly relevant to the contemporary world. It is a religion which has a lot in common with the Buddhist and Hindu traditions of India, with which it has existed for at least two and a half millennia. But it is also a religion that has many of its distinctive features and insights which distinguish it quite clearly from these other traditions.

The main goal of the author is to make the Jain tradition accessible to the average Western reader, on the assumption that knowledge of this tradition will be of global benefit. This is not a book for experts on Jainism. Nor does it claim to be an exhaustive or comprehensive account of Jainism, or a reference work where one could find everything one wanted to know about this tradition. It is not a detailed monograph on one particular aspect of Jainism. Nor does it pretend to be a book that would explain to Jains how they should view their own tradition.
The author is not a Jain. But he views both the Jain religion and the Jain community as embodying ideals and practices that have relevance for all human beings. The author is not the first non-Jain to so view the tradition for, Jainism, throughout its long history, has had a significant impact on the Hindu and Buddhist traditions which have been its primary interlocutors. It is the view of author that a global extension of the influence of Jain ideals would be a welcome development: that Jain principles like nonviolence (ahimsa), non-attachment (aparigraha) and non-absolutism (anekantavada) are vitally important, globally relevant principles that have a great deal to recommend them even to those who are not Jain. In other words, one need not be a Jain in order to learn valuable lessons from Jainism. Even though its primary mandate is to describe Jainism as accurately and as fairly as possible, what makes this book one the best books on Jainism written in English in the past decade is that the author, Dr Jeffery D Long, offers both: description as well as interpretation. He explores Jain asceticism, Jain worship, the life of the Jain layperson, relations between Jainism and other Indic faiths, the Jain philosophy of relativity (anekantavada), and the implications of Jain ideas for the contemporary world. This book presents Jainism in a way that is both authentic and engaging to specialists as well as the common reader.

JAIN KUTCHI OSWAL TRUST RESTORES 140-YEAR-OLD WATER FOUNTAIN IN MUMBAI
Mar. 8th, 2015. Mumbai. An ornate 140-year-old water fountain and clock tower located in Masjid area has been rededicated to Mumbai City. The fountain was originally built by trader philanthropist Kessowji Naik. Naik had contributed the largest share of private land to the Bombay Port Trust. He wielded tremendous influence during the Raj era and was awarded the Peace of Justice Award by the British governor. According to the trust President, Nayan Bheda, it has been restored by his native Kutchi Dsaha Oswal Jain Mahajan community at a cost of Rs 30 lakh. The Jain trust also runs a 182-year-old Shri Ananthnath Derasar nearby. This is reportedly the third oldest Jain temple in Mumbai and was built to honour the 14th Tirthankar. The rededication ceremony was attended by the Chief Minister, Fadnavis along with State Minister Prakash Mehta and other dignitaries.

HINDUS URGE WASHINGTON GOVERNOR FOR TASK FORCE ON HATE CRIMES
Commending Washington Governor Jay Inslee for reported drawing attention to the recent vandalizing of Bothell and Kent Hindu temples and stressing the need of standing against acts of intolerance and hate, Hindus are urging him to create a Washington Governor's Task Force on Hate Crimes.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that Hindus were highly concerned about two vandalizing incidents involving Hindu temples in Bothell and Kent in Seattle metropolitan area in February, which were about 34 miles apart. Zed, however, thanked Inslee for meeting with Hindu temple leaders on March five and condemning acts of intolerance, intimidation and violence.
Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that it was shocking for the hard-working, harmonious and peaceful US Hindu community numbering about three million; who had made lot of contributions to the nation and society; to receive such signals of hatred and anger.
Rajan Zed suggested that this Task Force, headed by the Governor, might include senior state administration officials, law enforcement agencies, school district superintendents, religious leaders, community and human/civil rights activists, academic experts, etc., and should be designed to prevent/deal-with conflicts threatening community stability and well-being and eradicate hate/bias-motivated crime, besides developing strategies and increasing awareness.
Zed noted that besides grappling with issues of hate/bias motivated crimes, this Task Force should also aim to foster strong relationships/partnerships and build trust with diverse communities through robust outreach/interaction/coordination. No Washingtonian should fear being the victim of crime because of hatred/bias based on religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other circumstances.
Rajan Zed also suggested that hate crime reporting should be further strengthened and law enforcement policies/procedures/practices should be reviewed to further energize their response to hate crimes. Creating broader awareness might also help.
Zed stressed that basics of major world religions should be taught in both public and private high schools of the state and first responders should be imparted cultural competency training so that we understood each other better in view of increasing diversity of the state.
