Acharya Shree Tulsi - A Legend Of Humanity: Footprints in Villages

Published: 16.01.2014

In the opinion of Acharya Tulsi, village life reflects true way of living in India. Therefore, if monks travel on foot, they will regularly make contact with villagers. There will be a higher likelihood of helping every village family.

He said, "We can garner inner peace and mental satisfaction if we are available to share the sorrow of people and help them overcome their troubles. If we can bring a smile to the face of those we reach, what can be a better service to humanity?"

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "The soul of India resides in villages". Acharya Tulsi experienced this fact during his numerous journeys on foot. During his travels, he would walk 15-30 km daily. He would stay in small villages amongst people who were not known to him. Wherever he went, he always delivered his sermon twice a day. Most villagers came to listen to his discourse at night. Acharya Shree's words always proved to be very effective in improving the lives of villagers. After his lectures, many groups would visit him. Acharya Shree would have informal talks with them and he would learn about their lives. His responses made the listener more conscious of the harm they incurred to themselves and others and in almost all cases; they would quit vices in which they were regularly indulged. During one of his journeys, Acharya Shree visited a village named Guda Ramsinghji (Rajasthan), where he addressed farmers and Rajputs. The assistant commissioner of the municipality was present among the many. Some people from the gathering complained to Acharya Tulsi, "Our Asst commissioner drinks five bottles of liquor every day. He is never seen without a bottle."

Acharya Shree, in his sermon, then explained the detrimental effects of drinking liquor and also implored the audience to give up their drinking vice. Ten Rajputs, who would very rarely consume liquor stood up and took an oath to never drink again. To the surprise of the villagers, the asst. commissioner also willingly came forward and pledged to Acharya Shree, "I will never drink in future." He was firm in his determination and observed his vow for the rest of his life.
