This question was considered from the metaphysical point of view. This is the main centre of fire-bearing particles. The portion of the body between the anus and the navel is said to be the centre of apana prana (One of the five pranas which comes out through the anus).

Health is very closely related to apana prana. It has been said, Apanshudhih Svasthyam i.e.. Purity of apana means health. If the earth particles are to be regulated and have to be in the right condition, then we shall have to think about the senses as well.

What are the functions of the five senses? It has been universally accepted that the function of the eye is to see, of the ear to hear, of the nose to smell. However, from the point of the body structure and paryapti, their functions are far more extensive. The centre of our energy, which is called mooladhara [One of the six ganglions in the human body (basic food)] also known as terranium chakra has to be controlled and kept in healthy condition. When we concentrate on that centre, the sinews of the centre of energy move upward. It is called moolanadi [The main vein (basic pulse)]. In the language of yoga, the moolanadi is the key to health.

The centre of energy is the main factor related to the ailments from which a large number of men and women suffer. If that centre is not in good condition, then illnesses keep coming. If that centre is kept in a healthy condition, then it makes a lot of difference in terms of illnesses. The root cause of a large number of illnesses is in apana-prana. When we concentrate on the tip of our nose and are completely engrossed in that process, it becomes clear that the tip of the nose is very important for the purpose of controlling the earth (dead) atoms.
