Daṇḍanīti

A penal code (or policy) prevalent in very ancient time, in which there was provision for punish­ment corresponding to the graveness of crime.

daṇḍnam daṇḍaḥ - aparādhināmannśāsanaṃ, tatra tasya vāsa eva vā nītiḥ - nayo daṇḍanītiḥ.
