42nd IVU World Vegfest Moved to UAE

Due to the unforeseen development of the Ebola outbreak across many parts of Africa, Ghana and Togo had to unfortunately pull out as hosts of the IVU World Vegfest. A lot of discussion took place in the back channels of the IVU member organisations and there was a lot of deliberation as to whether to reschedule the IVU World Vegfest to 2015 or relocate the event to another host country. Two member organisations - one based in the United Arab Emirates and the other based in India stepped forward and have committed themselves to host the latest instalment of this conference.

As such, it has been decided by unanimous vote of the IVU International Council that the 42ndIVU World Vegfest earlier scheduled for Africa will now take place in Dubai and Chennai between 25 Nov and 30 Nov. The 43rd IVU World Vegfest scheduled for 2015 will then take place in Africa. The IVU takes this opportunity to thank the organisers in Ghana and Togo for all their efforts to ensure that Africa will still host their first ever IVU World Vegfest next year.

Pay People to Watch Videos of Factory Farming Cruelty

VegFund has an interesting campaign where some costs can be reimbursed for organising screening events where members of the public are offered an incentive to watch a short clip of basic animal cruelty practised as routine process in factory farming, to the end. With an instructional video (http://youtu.be/NnW6KqwTKkE) to guide interested activists and the video supplied by the organisation with detailed instructions how to execute the exercise, this is definitely something that can work in places such as school campuses where there is high pedestrian traffic. To find out more and explore the possibility, please visit http://vegfund.org/pay-per-view-intro.html.

Greger on Gluten (Free DVD)

Is gluten sensitivity real? If so, how many does it affect? Should one just err on the side of caution and avoid gluten or are there actual benefits of gluten on which the gluten-free crowd is missing out? All these questions are answered by the ever-popular Dr Michael Greger in three new videos on gluten in his latest DVD release, Latest in Clinical Nutrition: Vol 20. The videos are individuallyavailable for free on Dr Greger's site as well and can be watched via these links.

Book News 1: Vegan (Express Edition)

Reviewed by Paul Appleby

Becoming Vegan (Express Edition) is a revised and updated edition of the standard reference book on vegan nutrition first published in 2000. The 2013 Express Edition is aimed at a general readership, whereas the forthcoming Comprehensive Edition, featuring "additional topics, in-depth analyses, and full citations of scientific studies" is targeted at health professionals and readers wanting to explore the underlying science.

All the essential nutrients are covered with chapters on fats (good and bad), protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Other chapters deal with additional protective compounds found in plant foods, the importance of avoiding underweight as well as overweight and obesity, and vegan nutrition for pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers, infants and children, senior citizens and the athletically inclined. The opening chapters present the case for veganism and the potential benefits to health of a well-planned vegan diet, and the book concludes with a vegan food guide, including sample menus across a range of energy intakes.

Anyone who has had the good fortune to attend a talk by Brenda Davis will know that she is an outstanding and inspirational speaker and a worthy inductee into the Vegetarian Hall of Fame. Fellow dietician Vesanto Melina has taught nutrition, co-authored the joint position paper on vegetarian diets for the US Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and Dietitians of Canada, and is currently a consultant to the government of British Columbia. Together they have produced a comprehensive, evidence-based, readable and superbly designed guide to vegan nutrition that is replete with informative figures and tables and sound advice. Put simply, Becoming Vegan is a must-have book for existing and aspiring vegans who care about the food they eat and who wish to follow a varied and nutritious diet that works to their advantage.

There is also a more detailed version entitled Becoming Vegan: Comprehensive Edition that provides a meticulous, in-depth review of vegan nutrition and is fully referenced.
